February 18, 200917 yr This is my personal opinion, but I believe Reagan should be at LEAST in the top 5. He did wonders for our Nation and the World for that matter.
February 19, 200917 yr What does that have to do with my post? hoopboy made the claim that Clinton paid the debt down a bunch. He was wrong, I called him on it. But hey, I guess as long as you get your daily shot at Bush in there some where.Easy, woodsrider ... don't get so defensive. Actually, it's been a while ... And as long as what I'm posting is factual, how is that "taking a shot" at the guy?
February 19, 200917 yr Yeah, but at least the budget had a surplus and he didn't pile a bunch of new debt on the one he inherited. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think his successor can make either claim. That's untrue. You need to check your sources and edit your post. Check with the Bureau of Public Debt, which is a small department within the United States Treasury. You need to insert the dates yourself. When former President Clinton took office on January 20th, 1993, the Total Public Debt Outstanding was $4,188,092,107,183.60. On January 19th, 2001, the Total Public Debt Outstanding was $5,727,776,738,304.64. This is an increase of ~$1,500,000,000,000,000 ($1.5 Trillion). You need to either refute my claim or ask a moderator to edit your post.

February 19, 200917 yr I think he meant a budget surplus for a year(s?). We'll see. I'd like to see proof of that- but even if I did, does it matter if it was a surplus for 1 year (or even 7 years) if the end result of the 8 years was $1.5 trillion more in debt? I hope no one sees this as a defense of former President Bush.

February 19, 200917 yr Believe this or not....there is actually a teacher in our high school (I won't say where) who teaches children that Lincoln was a homosexual and that he was a slaveowner. Now, I know he was forced into being an abolitionist, but a slaveowning homosexual... Can anyone confirm this lunacy??? I don't know about owning slaves, but there is some compelling evidence that he may have been a homosexual based on his relationship with Joshua Speed (of the Louisville Speed family).

If this is regarding the "sleeping together in the same bed" anecdotes they are horribly twisted out of context in the modern sense. Heterosexual men sharing a bed was not an uncommon practice in that era.

My comment was meant to compare the Clinton debt to the Bush debt, relatively speaking. The debt is now $10.7 trillion, nearly double the one Bush inherited. Just curious ... how much of that $1.5 trillion was actually on the Clinton books and how much of it was interest on the debt he inherited? One other thing I've always wondered ... what percentage of the current national debt was incurred by the Reagan and Bush administrations?

February 19, 200917 yr Were you actually awake when Clinton was awake? He didn't lower the national debt by a bunch. And Gas was never $0.79 as an average at any point while Clinton was in office. You may have been able to find somewhere to buy it for that at some point under Clinton but that was definitley not the norm. In any event, I'd say it was a far bit better than $4.00 a gallon wouldn't you?
February 19, 200917 yr I seem to recall paying about $1.59 in early 2000. How much did you pay in early 2008?
