Lincoln ranked best president by historians

WASHINGTON – Just days after the nation honored the 200th anniversary of his birth, 65 historians ranked Abraham Lincoln as the nation's best president.

Former President George W. Bush, who left office last month, was ranked 36th out of the 42 men who had been chief executive by the end of 2008, according to a survey conducted by the cable channel C-SPAN.

Bush scored lowest in international relations, where he was ranked 41st, and in economic management, where he was ranked 40th. His highest ranking, 24th, was in the category of pursuing equal justice for all. He was ranked 25th in crisis leadership and vision and agenda setting.

Where would you rank W???

36/42 sounds about right to me. He's in the top 85 percent.

I saw the article in the paper today. Interesting how the ratings change over time.

I disagree about Lincoln being #1. IMO, FDR has to be #1 with what he did to save the economy after the depression plus having to deal with WW2. All the while dealing with Polio.

I'd rank George Washington ahead of Lincoln as well for obvious purposes.

There are many that would argue that FDR's policies did more to continue the depression than to get the U.S. out of it.

I feel Bush's leadership when dealing with 9/11 was sufficient to garner him a much better ranking than 24th in crisis leadership.

:thumb: I agree with both points! I believe the only time a president was hit with a comparable crisis was during Pearl Harbor. And that one was far more forseeable!

I haven't heard that argument yet? If you don't mind to explain it... I'm up for a history lesson.

I'm not that well versed on it, but I know cch5432 has mentioned it on more than one occassion. I'm not really familiar enough with it to give a good explaination.

Not putting the details into play we weren't really out of the depression until we began selling war materials to the British and Soviets in WWII and our economy still didn't really kick into high gear until we entered in late '41.

More details from our resident economist to come. :thumb:

Lincoln #1????

He violated the constitution by invading other states, (the states had the legal right to self determination)

He spoke out against equal freedoms for Blacks and Whites during the famous Lincoln-Douglas Debates

Intentionally only freed the slaves in the southern states with the Emancipation Proclamation, no slaves in Union States including KY were freed by the EP.

Would check out books on military tactics from the library of congress, and then try to dictate every move of his Generals from Washington. In Lincoln defense, he did have the decided disadvantage when it came to comparing his officers to those they were going against from the south, probably felt some or most needed a kick in the butt.

I'm not a hater, I think Lincoln was a fine President and may have had some of the toughest decisions to make of any President. I just DO NOT think he is #1.
