62nd District pairings

Featured Replies

I, for one, have been seeing the irony of this situation all week. I liked the random draw of 62nd districts past. When Morgan was placed in our district, East and West had the necessary votes to force seeding. Elliott and Lewis had both resisted seeding for years. I'll never forget a comment from a school representative supporting seeding: "Now we will be able to do the tournament the right way!"

Doesn't look to me like the planning was done "the right way."

Those may be the facts as spun by some at the meeting. Others at the meeting give a different version of the facts. I guess it depends on who you choose to listen to. I really have no dog in the fight. One fact we can all agree on is that changes have been put in place to keep this unfortunate set of circumstances fromm happening again. It is truly a shame that the tie breaker rules were so poorly thought out and written to begin with.

Can people in BGP land please tell me the INTENT of the following statement

Tie breaker #2

2. Point difference between the TWO teams that are tied

Why would Morgan County follow a two way tie breaking system when the FACT of the matter is, there is a three way tie

Furthermore, what documentation proof can you provide that denotes a point system of +11, +7, etc. by tallying up points of games and how bad someone beat the other?

I beg to differ sir. Sportsmanship died long ago. Have you heard fans cheer against other players , not cheer for their teams? Have you seen parents ejected from games due to threats to officials. Have you seen things thrown onto floor? Fights? Coaches face down referee's? All these things are accepted as part of the game, and that is ok if you see it that way,but are all loss of sportsmanship. This instance was a case of strict rules intrepretation due to poor wording by the 62nd district. If Morgan's fate is determined by tipping it up or a coin flip, I would imagine the people of the 62 would be fine with that in comparison to being "pencil whipped" into a game, due to a "clarification" that was rightfully overturned. (IMO)

But, when the new by-laws were written when Morgan Co. joined the district, wasn't the spirit of the tiebreaker-in regards to point differential, to be between the teams tied, whether or not it was 2, 3 or 4, and just uncorrectly written by Morgan Co. at the time (since they did host the first tournament in realigned district)?

In an article in the ADI, Morgan Co. AD was quoted as saying, “I say we leave it in the hands of the kids,” Trusty said. But with everything that has taken place, how can that comment be justified. Point Differential tiebreaker allowed the kids to settle it on the floor, but was thrown out because of two team argument. Playing the rest of the games through the week would let the kids settle it, but was turned down by MC. And while not confirmed, a matchup between the tow teams would have let the players settled it, but was supposedly shot down.

All this leads to a coin flip. And how does that allow it to be left in the hands of the kids?

I still do not see the home cooking angle. East Carter did not make the decision, the KHSAA did. There was no tie breaker system for three teams according to our newest member. It seems funny that all of the other schools knew the intent of the rule was to break any tie except for Morgan County. They also refused a playoff game to decide it. I suppose they feel their best shot at going to the Regional lies in a coin toss and not competition. Go Radio is exactly right...sportsmanship has died.

The home cooking angle is asking for a clarification on something that isn't a tourny game. I would think something was misunderstood by the KHSAA or they wouldn't have changed their ruling. If East is so confident to play now, step up and play Elliott. If Morgan or East of West plays Elliott and its done according to what was instituted by the 62nd, I have no problem with that. The problem lies when situations are manipulated for one teams advantage.

That point differential system is used in pool play all summer in virtually eevry AAU tournament to determine seeding. However, I believe in a regular season that only leads to teams running up the score. The winning percentage angle only promotes weal scheduling. Both of those ideas were poorly thought out. The only way to decide it fairly in the future is head to head meetings followed by a blind draw if a tie still exists and I am told that is the new system.

If they play out both teams schedule this week and both teams win their two games is it still tied?

You are exactly right, I hope they play.

The irony is that most everyone wanted seeded tournaments and now look at how many people are pleading for a coin flip. I have always been in favor of seeding the tournaments, but there has to be a better tie breaking system than what is in place. The 63rd could have been seeded completely different if a only one make up game was played between Rowan County and Lewis County (I think tht's right). Now, there could be the argument that in the future some teams may not make up games in order to delete common opponents and to have a higher winning percentage within the district and so on. All I can say is that it is a complete fiasco.

On the other hand, people can argue that if you win your games, you don't have to worry about tie breakers and what not.

Not to bright lying to KHSAA about playing in a showcase and saying it was a tournament. forgot about the coin toss KHSAA should put East at the 4th seed for trying to pull one.

My son who is in the 2nd grade and plays ball knows the difference between a tournament and one game.

Where do you get off saying someone lied. Did you take the call to the KHSAA. On their own scoreboard the event in question was officially called the Commodore Classic. It was a two day event East did play on Friday which was known and they render a decision. They reversed fine flip the coin. Why was Morgan against the fairest way of playing on a neutral floor and decide it on the court. Instead of Maggoffin, Tates Creek, Sissionville WV, and teams like this deciding who plays who in the 62nd district tourn.

:ohbrother:

Great doc one of the best I've seen.:jump::walk:

Tournaments are set up so that the top 2 teams come out of pool play. If there is a tie, then points differential is used among all the teams games in pool play. Based upon that you would take the points differential of all the games including Elliott and usually there is a maximum differential to factor in like +-23 points. I've watched a ton of AAU and other tournaments and that is how it was always done.

Also, I have a question on the showcase game. If the showcase had scheduled 3 or 4 games for each team in it, how many of the games would have counted towards the teams maximum games allowed? In a round robin, where no team advances to a championship game, does that count as a tournament?

If nothing else comes out of this fiasco. The KHSAA may now make uniform guidelines for all district's that seed just like they have for blind draw districts.
