Personal opinion on Gillispie and so on...

I think he's over rated. IMO UK did not need rebuilding as I've read so many times.

I think Gillispie is a good coach. 1 thing I love about his teams typically is they play great defense and really get after it. Like his style or his in-game strategies or not I believe thats 1st and foremost. Now, during the 3 game losing streak I thought our defense really fell off and wasn't as good. But last night our defense was much better.

Now I do have some concerns. 1st and foremost is recruiting. While Gillispie has done a great job getting some very good players I also think he is making some mistakes along the way. I don't understand Donald Williams at all. And I am not high at all on GJ Villarino or KC Ross Miller. That is a problem we have now is a lack of playmakers at the guard position.

I think people are really overreacting. They need to give Gillispie time.

Here is the flip side. How did he leave them???

UTEP has had 2 Coaches since he left

Records

27-7 14-4 NCAA 1st Rnd

20-9 11-3 NIT 1st Rnd

14-17 6-10 None

19-14 8-8 CBI 1st Rnd

13-9 4-4 (Season in Progress)

Texas A&M has had Turgeon since BCG left

25-11 8-8 NCAA 2nd Rnd

17-7 3-6 (Season in Progress)

BCG recruited the best player that has been through Kentucky since at least 98'. Patterson is a better player than anyone that Tubby ever brought into Kentucky. After his recruiting skills make up for his lack of experience of coaching skills BCG will have a year or 2 where he is the coach of the year and final four here we come. I am not saying he is the greatest coach yet but he is a proven recruiter and when you have top notch players you will win. Players make up for coaching mistakes at an level.

Tubby Smith recruited Patterson to U.K., that is a known fact. BCG came in, made a visit to Huntington,W.VA and confirmed that he was still intersted. Also, U.K. may have had Jai Lucas and would have the big guy at Mich. State (can't think of the name right now), he changed his mind and went with MSU when OTS left.

Bottom line is though Patterson signed with BCG as the coach so it is his recruit no matter how you look at it.

And I remember reading something along the lines that had Patterson quoted as saying when OTS left that he longer felt interested about attending UK as OTS was the one who had been recruiting him this whole time. Later on in the story, he said that BCG paid him a visit though and he made a really good connection with him and spiked his interest again and he ultimately ended up choosing UK. I'll try and find a link of the story I read that had this in it....

He has revitalized two programs from basically nothing to competing in their respective conferences.

He is doing the same thing here, to a degree. UK is still and will always be a factor in the SEC. He is just doing some upgrading here and there and fine-tuning things is all.

One thing to rebuild a program (UTEP,A&M) where basically nothing was expected and he did that.

Now, BCG is in charge lf a program with the most wins in NCAA basketball where everything is expected and more.....49 NCAA apperances (most of any school), a 98-44 NCAA tourney record, 10 national title games, 7 national titles, 13 final four's, 31 elite 8 finishes. U.K. has 43 SEC championships and 25 SEC tournament championships.

So...imo it remains to be seen what he can and will do here where there are huge expectations (some unrealistic) every year.

I like BCG, support him and want him to do well, I am a U.K. fan, always have been and always will be. I just hope that regardless of what happens that it doesn't get to the point of sensless bashing of BCG like there was with OTS but I full well know there is a fat chance of that. I am not calling anyone out personally here, just stating my opinion.

SEC officials are terrible, he should be getting under their skin. Should Coach K stop whining to the officials too?

It seems to work for Coach K(with most officials)............and have the opposite effect for Coach G.

Bottom line is though Patterson signed with BCG as the coach so it is his recruit no matter how you look at it.

That is your opinion that you are entitled to and I have mine. I am not going to argue it with you.

Tubby recruited a lot of good players that didn't end up signing with him.

PP signed with BCG, not Tubby. Thats the only fact here.

:thumb: Coach K has a little more "clout" than BCG.

See post 38.

During the past week, many Wildcat fans have voiced their displeasure with Gillispie and how his Kentucky Wildcats team is doing. We heard everyone's opinion about how Kentucky isn't doing this, and they aren't doing that. The people who called for Gillispie's head because he was too stubborn to change.

And I agree that Gillispie has a lot to prove, but I am glad he's not sacrificing his methods of success to pick up wins in the short term.

When Pitino took over as coach during the probation years, it would have beneficial in the short term to slow things down and the 'Cats may have won more, but Rick insisted on building the program his way and he kept his system in place. Remember folks, rebuilding of a program doesn't happen overnight and usually it will start out shaky.

So, answer this question: how many programs have gone from mediocre to greatness in two years or less?

Gillispie will instill his style on this program and that's the way it will be. Howland at UCLA built his program and his philosophy around defense and that's the way it was. After time, he got the players in that he wanted and they won. Why? Because he instilled the mentality in UCLA that they were going to be a defensive bunch.

With time, people, everything will be okay. Meeks scoring 54 points may have been the worst thing that could have happened this year in hindsight. Yes, I am so proud and very happy that Meeks done it and I would love if he could do it all of the time. But when he did, the expectations for this season shot up like a rocket, whenever this team wasn't nearly as good as they seemed.

The program wasn't broken when he got here.

Tubby recruited a lot of good players that didn't end up signing with him.

Exactly.

The program wasn't broken when he got here.

They were 22-13 and 22-12 the two years before he arrived. (And I'll get it out of the way, yes, they were 18-13 last year.)

I don't think anyone thinks those are acceptable records for UK. If BCG can't improve on that within a year or two, he'll be gone as well.

Tubby actually started the recruiting process with Patterson and if he had stayed you would have most likely seen Jai Lucas and Patterson together in Rupp. Lucas didnt come because Tubby left but I give props to Gillispie to getting Patterson to still come even though Tubby left.
