Why the opposition to SCHIP?

What does private insurance cost for a family of four, any idea?

Mortgage - 1200.00

Car - 200

heat - 200 (monthly average on the conservative side)

elec - 200

Groceries - 600

gas for car - 200

Car Ins. - 150

i am up to almost 3000 a month already just playing around, which is 36,000 a year. 68000 AGI is actually around 57,800 - 36,000 is 21,000. I don't have home insurance here and many other things.

lets be conservative and say family of four insurance is 1200.00 per month so that is 14,400.00 per year. Only 7000 to play with for clothes and other incidentals.

not going to happen. Especially in you live in the northeast, and I am not talking about Ashland

First of all a family of four with an income of $68,000 has no business having a mortgage payment of $1200. And $400 a month in utilities on average is way too high for the size of house these people would be living in. On average it would be closer to $250 (and I still think that is a high estimate).

Second, if both adults had jobs making $34,000 a year they would almost certainly have the option of having medical insurance available through their jobs.

1. A small two bedroom home in Frankfort, typical town in KY. 27,000 population runs well over 100,000.00. Mortgage on that is going to be over 1200.00. Three bedroom with around 1600 square feet is going to be over 150,000 with a mortgage around 1500.00. How small of a house should a family of four live in? Or is it that you don't know what mortgage costs?

2. 1600 square foot house with both adults working can generate 400.00 worth of a gas bill in the winter. Add electric and I don't think 400 for gas and electric on average per month is high at all.

3. Why do you think someone getting paid 34,000 has medical insurance through their employer? - If it is a small business which creates most of the jobs there is no mandate on offering insurance.

FWIW, Humana for a family of four is around 1000.00 when the state is the buyer. I can't imagine what it is for a small business.

1. 30 year fixed mortgage on 100,000 @ 6% would be a payment of $600 a month. Maybe you don't know what mortgage cost. If that is what house cost in Frankfort I suggest moving.

2. Funny you picked 1600 square foot. That is the exact size of my house. If you are creating a $400 gas bill in a house that size you better call the gas company to come find you leak. My utility bill is at it's highest in Dec and Jan. In Dec 08 my bill was $280 and in Jan it was almost the same as Dec. That would include gas, electric, water, sewer, & garbage pick up.

3. Of course there are some that wouldn't have it offered but not many. Even most small business offer an insurance program to their employees.

Again it's funny you mention the state offered Humana. My wife works for the state as a social worker. A family plan for 4 would not be $1000 a month.

A 100,000 dollar home doesn't cost 1,000 dollars a month, even if you factor in taxes and insurance (escrow) it will still be under 1,000...But I understand your point 1,500 looks better than 800. One more thing, how often do children in America currently get turned away from health care when they need it?

Doesn't this bill allow 30 year olds to be insured through the program?

No one answered my question.

Does this bill (a bill that is supposed to be for CHILDREN) allow for 30 year olds to be insured through it???

I was going to say the same thing.

My mortagage runs just at $1200 a month and we have about 1800 ft of space and three bedrooms.

Gas and Electric has been just under $200 a month this winter.

I thought the cut off was 21.

I thought the cut off was 21.

SCHIP (or in Kentucky, KCHIP) is only available for children under the age of 21.

There are programs that provide medical coverage (SSI) for individuals age 21 and over. Additionally, KTAP or Family Related Medical is also an option for an adult with dependent children.

Not coming down in this debate on either side, but I thought I'd share this editorial in our local paper concerning a family that SCHIP would aid.

The article is about someone who now unemployed. The complaint is about the expansion of benefits to people who have insurance through their workplace or can afford it theirselves.

You asked "Why the opposition to SCHIP?" Obama signed an extension to this bill designed to provide halth insurance to children who "fall through the cracks." Families who make to much money for medicaid and are to poor to afford private insurance (or insurance through their employers.) This is a matching funds program administered by each state. Most states eligibility rules allow families to participate who make up to 200% of the Federal Poverty Level:

2008 HHS Poverty Guidelines

Persons in Family or Household

48 Contiguous States

1 $10,400

2 14,000

3 17,600

4 21,200

5 24,800

6 28,400

7 32,000

8 35,600

For each additional

person, add 3,600

I don't know what the opposition is in providing health care for the children of this nation. To me it is a basic need, as Obama said, "In a decent society, there are certain obligations that are not subject to trade-offs or negotiations, and health care for our children is one of those obligations."

Are people upset because they have a "Why not me?" attitude? thinking things like, "I have to pay, so should every one!" Where is your compassion? It is not the fault of the children!

I am sure there are abuses, as there are in every program, every society, but the vast majority of children are benefited by this type of program. AND most importantly to me, Obama paid for the program extension with a hike in the Federal tax on cigarettes!

How does the chart fit in with SCHIPP.

I have no problem with providing health care for the children of this country in the same manner we provide public education.

I don't think adults should be eligible unless that are physically and/or mentally unable to support themselves.

The chart is the federal poverty level, based on members of the household. For example if your state provides benefits to children in a family of 4, at 200% of poverty level, the family has to make less than $42,400.

Dave Ramsey lesson tonight at church had the following stats.

Playing the lottery

without hs diploma spends on average $173 per month on lottery games.

with college degree spends on average $49 on lottery games.

Those with incomes under $20,000 play the lottery TWICE AS MUCH as those who make over $40,000.

80% of millionaires are first generation millionaires who started with nothing and made themselves a millionaire.
