I have some ideas and have heard some rumors, but can't confirm anything yet. I really think it depends on what teaching positions will be open in Laurel County. There are a few assistants I hope they keep around.

Congrats to Chris Larkey and I can see North Laurel as a program on the rise.

I agree alot different when all of the pressure is on you.

I think I saw on a post that he had been coaching 18 years. 18 years at the high school level is pretty good experience.

I read where he was an assistant coach for Rockcastle Co. for 18 years. Don't most head coaches start out as assistants? I bet even Coach Hilton didn't immerge from his mother's womb as a head coach. They have to start somehwere and gain experience. Every head coach has to have that first year as a head coach. I also read that North Laurel's won 9 games since 2005. Give the guy a chance! Is there a stigma because he was an assistant or that he was an assistant to his dad?

I agree, Mamma Bear. It's not like he's taking over Highlands or Trinity/St. X as a first time HC.

He's got coaching experience out the wazoo, this is his first HC job. It's with a struggling program that I think most would agree has had it's share of failure. I don't think Chris is a risky hire, and even if he was, what more damage could he do? Lose some games? Have a bad year? This is the kind of "gamble" that pays dividends a lot of the time. I think he does well at NL and does things right. He's learned how to do things and knows what it takes to get it done, so now is his chance to show it.

I think what he was trying to imply is that just because you've coached 18 years at the same place doesn't necessarily mean it's a good thing. What can he bring to the table other than what he learned from his time at that one particular school? Personally, I would think an assistant coach would be more valuable had they worked for a couple of good head coaches to experience different systems and environments as opposed to just working in one place.

 

That being said, I don't know the man and wish him the best of luck at his new job at North Laurel.

Every head coach had a 1st head coaching job, this will be his. Many become head coaches after fewer years as an assistant than Chris has put in. He has been around football his entire life and in a great program. Every time someone hires a first time head coach there is a risk, but I think this will work out nicely.

Chris has also played at EKU for two years. He played WR one year and DB one year before he decided he would rather coach as play football on the college level. I am sure he picked up some valuable skills while playing under Roy Kidd.
