My sister in law is upset that KY has to make up the days from the wind storm in September and other states don't. She may have been referring to Ohio.

There is a myth out there that there are so many days that we don't have to make up. Presently, we have to make up every single day either by extending the school day (but I think the governor nixed that last year) or by adding onto the school year.

It seems that every school system across the state misses at least a couple of days each year due to illnesses (flu) so when bad weather hits (and yes it has been awful this year and we aren't through winter yet), school systems have numerous days off each year.

I know around here, school starts earlier each year (we used to start around Aug 20th, then it was Aug 15th, and this year was around the first part of Aug) and appears to remain in school until the end of May/beginning of June. If summer breaks have been shortened to two months each year, I find it hard to believe that school systems are not "building in" additional time in anticipation of illness and/or weather related closings. Therefore, everyone is doing all that they can do to institute preventive measures within their schedules.

A state of emergency has been declared in the state of Kentucky! Business have closed down, it has been recommended that individuals not travel unless it is an emergency. If the situation/roads are that dangerous (AND THEY ARE) then school systems should receive the same consideration! The state should impliment the calamity plan and the school systems should accept them!

Pike Co schools go an additional number of minutes each day, not sure of the amount, but somewhere around 20 minutes. By doing this, they "bank" 8 total school days over the course of the year. This allows them to miss up to 8 days for weather, sickness, etc. without adding any additional days to their calendar.

If I have that wrong, somebody correct me, please.

I have been out of highschool for 3 years. IMO 5 days of school had very little affect of what I learned. As long as the days come off after the CATS testing (which is an issue itself) it shouldnt be to much of a problem as long as the schools recieve funding.

Last year, I thought the Commissioner sent out a letter to the Superintendents concerning that and it was not allowed.

The reason why I say that, we added time to the day to make up for days we had missed and have more time for instruction before the CATS test. We received one of the letters saying that what we were doing was not legal.

The other issue is staffing. Students go by instructional minutes, so it does not matter with them, whether it is a 6 hour day or 7 hour day.

But with staff, we are employed for DAYS, not minutes. So, if you extend the day, the staff STILL has to work those days at the end of the school year.

And then classified staff, bus drivers, the like are missing out on money that they would have earned that they did not.

We do that too but rumor has it that utilizing those extra minutes is no longer accepted.

OK, so we miss some snow days. Why then do we just not make it up on Martin Luther King day or Presidents day or one of the many inservice days, or better yet, Election day is on Tues., yet they got Monday off also? Why did they get the Monday before the Election off school? That would have been a perfect day to make-up for the wind storm.

Highlands has no school May 1st. For what, I don't know. It does not say on the school calendar. Probably some inservice day. Use that day to make up a snow day. I can guarantee it is a teacher inservice day. So they will tack on an extra day at the end of the year where the kids will just get an abundance of academics on that particular day. (ok I was being sarcastic):irked:

I would much rather teach than have any inservice days. We obviously cannot use MLK day this year, as it has already passed. President's Day will now be gone, being used as a makeup day. Our school wasn't taking the primary election day off anyway, as we had no one on a ballot. As it is, if we miss no more days, students' last day will be June 2. I suppose that we can go to school on Memorial Day. Why not?

It used to be some of those days off we'd use as elective make up days if the district needed them, has that changed?
