Is this true for private schools in KY or just public?

I would much rather teach than have any inservice days. We obviously cannot use MLK day this year, as it has already passed. President's Day will now be gone, being used as a makeup day. Our school wasn't taking the primary election day off anyway, as we had no one on a ballot. As it is, if we miss no more days, students' last day will be June 2. I suppose that we can go to school on Memorial Day. Why not?

 

I'm not talking about the primary election, Fort Thomas had the day before the Presidential election off.:idunno:

OK, so we miss some snow days. Why then do we just not make it up on Martin Luther King day or Presidents day or one of the many inservice days, or better yet, Election day is on Tues., yet they got Monday off also? Why did they get the Monday before the Election off school? That would have been a perfect day to make-up for the wind storm.

 

Highlands has no school May 1st. For what, I don't know. It does not say on the school calendar. Probably some inservice day. Use that day to make up a snow day. I can guarantee it is a teacher inservice day. So they will tack on an extra day at the end of the year where the kids will just get an abundance of academics on that particular day. (ok I was being sarcastic):irked:

 

Election Day is state law. There is a requirement for a certain amount of computer systems for the polling places to take place at. For rural counties, those places that have the necessary computers happen to be the schools. Do you want 1,000 or so voters roaming in and out of an elementary school during the school day with little kindergartens and 1st graders running around the school, while they are moving about. Not to mention the polling places in our elementary schools are in the cafeteria and would give them no place to eat.

 

The day before Election day for us was a professional development day which is a required day for the school districts just not a day with students.

 

MLK usually we haven't missed enough days at that point.

President's Day for us is the first day removed from the calendar if we miss snow days. We will be in school on President's Day barring bad weather.

That is a reverent day to honor those that has passed on before us. I don't think it would be a wise move to go to school on this date.

Kids go to school for about 9 months. Around here they get Fall Break, Thanksgiving, Christmas, (Winter for correctness), Winter Break, February, Spring Break and then all summer. Mix in the other "Holidays" and In Service Days. So now they are actually in school Less than 8 months?

 

An we should not make up a certain amount of days because.....Why?

Interferes with Vacation?

Hardship on the kids?

Hardship on the teachers?

How about teaching them that in the real world. Business does not close. If it does, you don't get paid. I have been required to work all week and I drive around most days. My wife has been required to work all week, regardless of the dangers of getting to and from. Our companies don't offer "calamity" days. Handful of sick days, 2 weeks of vacation, and a the only the major holidays.

 

This is killing me. We already don't want to educate our kids, now we want to educate in 5 less days than before? Help me understand.

 

Who does having "calamity" days benefit the most?

As far as your first point of all the days off, that is irrelevant as they are in school for a certain number of days. In some form of calendar, they are in school that many days. Different districts handle it different ways but in KY all public districts have the same number of days in school.

THose on an hourly wage, you are correct. But those on salary would still get paid if they could not make it in up to a point, correct? So, the real world does work similarly.

For most on salary, you have to come in earlier, stay later, you still must complete your tasks withing the required timelines, whether the office was closed or not. So you actually do have to make it up in completing a task in less time than you would have had otherwise.
