The "not just white construction workers" thread has really got me thinking.

 

We don't want people to expect a handout. Give a hand up, not a hand out. I agree with this 100%. Take away any racial implications (I know that they are important for the other thread, but not what I want to focus on in this one). Many posters felt that we were wanting to employ the "unemployable" for the infrastructure projects that are part of the stimulus package...that there was a reason for their inability to hold a job.

 

Perhaps it's true. How do we fix it, though? IF (and for me it is an if) this is true and we can't fix it, what do we do with these people? Are our hands tied? How are these "unemployables" currently surviving? Welfare? What, do you propose, we do with them?

I believe that everyone can be productive. For far too long in this country welfare has become a way of life and not a means to an end. Reduce welfare recipients to two years of benefits in which amount of time this country will also afford you education to learn a trade. The old addage comes into play give a man a fish he eats for a day...teach him to fish he eats for a life time. We need to focus on education and bring pride back to people and this country. Society needs to realign it's thinking about self worth. Anyone given the right "tools" can and will choose to be productive.

Sadly enough there are those in this society that have fallen into generational beliefs of being owed and they are the ones who need to benefit from a little tough love..."you've been taken care of long enough...now it's your turn to give back."

Oh come on, Ace. Look around you for Pete's sake, there are plenty of people on welfare simply because they are lazy. That doesn't mean all of them are, but too darn many of them are. Come up to NKY sometime, I'll take you to a few areas in Cincinnati and NKY that have more than their share of these types of dregs.

Welfare was originally designed to help in times of need, not to become a way of life. How long does one need to pull themselves back up? We are demanding that our country pull itself back up overnight. I work in a school system and I will tell you there are more than you can imagine. They have become masterful at manipulating the systems that are in place for aid. If they would expend as much energy in learning a trade as they do avoiding working or working towards something we could have a generally successful country. I'm not saying there aren't those that simply cannot work...they get disability, medicare/medicaid, food stamps.

What can you do with people that don't care?

Now, if they care, education is the key. Let them learn a trade or something that can help make them productive. Now, if many states (as well as the nation) continues to pile taxes on companies, then it won't matter because these companies will move to another country or state that's more "friendly" to companies that have to compete in a the global market.

Well I have taught some families who have it as a way of life.

They haven't tried in educating themselves to better themselves but rather want to let the government take care of them.

They use their check money for cigarettes, beer and tattoos.

I think there should be an educational requirement in which they are doing something to try and make themselve more employable and governmental jobs as easy as picking up trash alongside the highway and doing something to pay society back for us taking care of them.

 

I AM NOT talking about disability but rather welfare. I am 100% for no strings attached to those that are truly disabled and need society to help them.

2) Let them become (or perhaps continue to be) criminals?

3) Round them up and kill them? (I know it sounds extreme, but is it an option?)

We (myself included) spend a lot of time complaining about those that "won't" do for themselves. Honestly, what do we do with them?

Well Darwinism is pushed awful hard in this country as the way of things. Maybe we should embrace it as we are told to do.

all of them, because no where in the constitution does it say the government can take my money and give it to someone else. I can choose to help someone, but i cant be forced to give it to them.

Well it's quite foolish to deny that some people are on some form of welfare that shouldn't be. Do you not know anyone on welfare (disability included) that shouldn't be?
