I'd say they are more part of a Diocese than a school system. And I will assume that the tuition is less at let's say St. Therese than NCC. So the student playing for NCC, but attending St. Therese, as an 8th grader will be paying less tuition than a frosh. Just a guess though.

If the players are talented enough and not simply related to someone on the staff, certainly. I believe Manual's best female player is an 8th grader.

Some small schools (Beechwood for one) don't have a choice. They have to play middle school players.

 

I know 2 of the three middle school players that play some varsity BB at Beechwood. They are decent players. However, if they are not starting or getting significant playing time, what's the point? Also, part of me believes that by bringing up the "good" middle school players to the varsity level, you're hurting the other "so-so" middle school players who are not good enough to move up. What happens when those middle of the road players finally reach the varsity level? On a personal note, I have a daughter who is an 8th grader and she's a decent player. I'd rather that she get significant playing time at the 8th grade level and work on her skills, than to get moved up to the JV or varsity level and play sparingly.

Yeah, both St. Therese and St. Catherine are non-tuition schools. Actually the only two in the Covington Diocese that I know of. Now, keep in mind that when I say non-tuition what the intent is that if a student attends those schools then the those Parishes expect the parents to put comparibale equal tuition like money in the basket every Sunday. With all of that said it still creates a problem with Tuition paying NCC families who has a Daughter or Son who loses out on a position to an 8th grader who quit possibly may not attend NCC the next yr. Who knows they may wind up at Brossart or even a public school. I believe that to curb all of this shopping around, there should be a rule in place that once you wear that HS game uniform once at any level you are there for the long run.

I can tell you that St Henry District High School will not allow students from their "feeder" schools to try out or participate in any Varsity, JV, or Freshman athletic teams unless they need help in filling a roster. Once accepted on a team, most coaches will play based on ability, not grade. So in answer to your question, they will NOT allow a non-tuition paying grade school student to take a spot away from the high school student. In St. Henry's case, I would say it makes sense, seeing that so many of the most athletic students from their feeder schools end up at Cov Cath & Notre Dame....:irked:

What is wrong with some of you. If a girl or boy is good enough to play at the next level or even play varsity then they should play. THey should be free from criticisms from you parents that don't agree with the coaching staff. Those of you that have a problem with this are probably the ones with upperclassmen that lose playing time, they just may need to work a little harder. Remember you earn your playing time IT IS NOT GIVEN TO YOU!

Your problem is with the paying tuition, I guess it makes sense I hope St. henry is ok with losing players. If they are good for them...

I agree, but.... She should sit the bench each and every chance she can, the more she is around the game and in the huddle, and locker room the more she can grow. But take care of middle school first, then prepare for the JV/V.

However, that's not always the case in a lot of programs and schools. Unfortunately, outside influences or pressures, more than should be tolerated, can and do impact a coaches opinion as to who the "best" player is from game to game.

Your problem is with the paying tuition, I guess it makes sense I hope St. henry is ok with losing players. If they are good for them...

 

 

 

Simply stating the school policy, never said I had a problem with paying tuition. With no guarantee that "feeder school" students will end up attending there, there's always a risk of taking playing time from freshman/sophomore players already enrolled in the program and giving 7 & 8th grade girls that experience, only to lose them to a competing program. I guess you could call it a double edged sword. Personally, I would prefer to allow students of any age/grade to try out, play those with the most talent.

I would say that it happens a lot less then most people think. Almost every coach plays the players that he percieves to be the best, based on his or her observations in practice and in games. Parents, however, sometimes have a different perception (almost always skewed towards their kid).

 

 

Coaches want to win above anything else. They are competitive by nature and will not sacrafice wins to play "favorites"

This will probably never happen. I don't think the KHSAA can or wants to try to enforce rules for kids that are in middle school who happen to play HS sports.

Paying tuition has nothing to do with it, you make it sounds as though the students tuition includes their right to playing time. Wouldn't the younger player be paying the same tuition?
