Highlands vs. Beechwood (1/16)

Recommended Posts

Highlands made a statement last night that they are the clear cut #2 team in the region behind the Holmes Bulldogs. Beechwood is solidifying their spot in the NKY Top 10 and having a great season. Birds are on the road in this one and Beechwood is coming off a nice victory over the Colonels of CovCath.

I like the Birds in a close game.

Same song, different tune. Highlands physical defense and depth will be the deciding factor in this game and why they win.

Beechwood is solid and on a roll right now, but I think the Birds slow them down. Kowolonek and Grote will be the best guard tandem that Beechwood as seen. (Outside of the Holmes game). I expect Grote to hold Beuttel in check and Kowolonek's size to frustrate Romes both offensively and defensively.

Since the game is at Beechwood:

Highlands 63

Beechwood 51

The fun just keeps coming for Beechwood. If you are a Beechwood fan, you have to be loving this. First, you knock off rival CovCath. Now you get to test yourself against another basketball program with a strong winning tradition. And there is actually a chance you might win?!? It hasn't been this much fun for Beechwood basketball in quite a while....perhaps ever?

Interested to see that match up. I agree Beuttel won't do much, doesn't really play well against good defense.

I think at least since around 1980. They were pretty tough then, and ranked #1 in the region at a time that year. Lost to Campbell Co in the regionals at Holmes that year.

Who were the key players on that team? Was that when Kurt Pohlgeers played? He was a big center and went on to play at TMC I believe.

I think it was the 80/81 season. They beat Highlands, Newport, Campbell Co. Players included Steve Brown, Joe Moser, Mitch Thurman, Dave Ahlers and Jeff Ward.

Clyde, Bailey Morlidge graduated in 80.

Voice, I think Kurt Pohlgeers graduated in 79.
