Covington Catholic 54 Owensboro 47

Somewhat of a surprise?

CovCath Internet Radio didn't do the CovCath vs Owensboro game but instead did the Mason Co vs CovCath Freshmen game.

In the CovCath vs Owensboro game.....

Maile was the leading scorer with 20 points, followed by Ives with 19 and Wellbrock with 6 points. Ives had a great game as he was 5/7 from behind the arch...

Good to see Ives shooting well.

Good to see Jake Thelen with 7 boards.

Did Pauly not play?

From my source, it looks like Pauly didn't play a minute. So CovCath beats a very good Owensboro team without two of their three starting guards. One of these days the Colonels will be hitting on all cylinders when Shover and Pauly are both healthy.

Just curious but has any team this season played as tough as a schedule as CovCath has?

This is a very good win for the Colonels. They seem to finally be playing as a team and playing well.

Not to put a damper on the win, but I was told that Owensboro was without their best player tonight. I don't know how much of a difference he would have made, as CCH played pretty well, but I don't think we saw a full strength team. Then again they didn't see two of our guards soo..

It was GREAT to see Isler, Thelen, Wellbrock, Maile, and Ives in there. BIG lineup, and it shutdown the Owensboro offense. Ives had a great game, shot amazing. He also did not have too many turnovers, which is what we need out of a guard. Maile also put up the points, however he SERIOUSLY needs to recognize his strengths. He is NOT a ball handler. It is a mess to watch..off his knees, feet, hands...pass the ball. When he drives in he is a force. Thelen and Isler compliment each other well down low, and with Wellbrock in there as well it made for a very good big lineup. Listerman also only used 7 kids tonight. The only ones off the bench were Thelen and Heimbrock. I was somewhat surprised by this, but if you look back, they always play better and have won usuing only 7 to 8 players. Need to stick with it.

My last thought is I was SUPER disappointed with the refs in both games I saw tonight, and I heard the past two days were not much better. The refs seemed to have little to no basic knowledge of basketball. The foul calling was terrible. 9th region is lucky to have the refs they have. ;)

After the 0-6 start the walking wounded Colonels have won 3 of their last 4 games. Coach Listerman is in the laboratory mixing and probing. It will be interesting to see how the remainder of the season will break, especially after the team gets healthy.

That might be the CCH lineup to go with IMO.

I would agree. I think listerman put them in tonight to see how they worked together and to see if they could run the floor well, with 3 of them being big guys [6'4 and over] and it worked.

Cov Cath played two very good and exciting games in this tournament. Keep it up boys. There are some 9th region teams that might get a big surprise.

So you first complain that our forward has too many TOs and then you want to stack a lineup with people who handle the ball worse than he does? That's a slow-footed lineup that is going to have trouble against teams that aren't big.

I spoke to someone who went to the game and they said that this wasn't a good win (not sure there is such a thing as a 'bad' win) for CCH because O'boro was "really, really bad". Was CCH that sloppy? How many turnovers? Missed bunny shots? Did O'boro press at all?

Edited some puncuation.

I saw that Yorell Shemwell's name was not in the box score. He is the catalyst to their team and the only guard that can distribute and score. I would hate to see Owensboro's team without him - that would be ugly. I bet they average two 3-point attempts a game, anyway. Good confidence builder and good win for CCHS!
