Score a point for Taveras' agent, who somehow convinced the Reds to go to two years after no one was willing to trade a minor prospect to the Rockies for him just a couple of weeks ago. What makes it especially silly in this case is that Taveras would have been under control for 2010 even if he had signed a one-year deal. He has just 4+ years of service time and wouldn't have been eligible for free agency unless he was non-tendered again. Taveras almost certainly will act as the Reds' everyday center fielder and leadoff hitter. Chris Dickerson, who had 17 extra-base hits in 102 at-bats last season (Taveras had 18 in 479), is still an option in left at the moment, but the Reds probably aren't through.

For the record I like the signing. I think Taveras will give the Reds the speed that they've needed at the top of the lineup, and a good defensive CF. It will allow Bruce to move over to RF, and hopefully help him relax even more at the plate. Jamie Quirk, a first year Reds scout, who was a coach for Clint Hurdle last year felt that Taveras tried to swing for the fences too much last year, and that if he goes back to hitting the ball on the ground, and bunting for hits that his average and OBP will go back closer to his 2007 numbers. I hope he's right.

And? It took the jump of the ball off the bat out of play in altitude. Mission accomplished. I think he will do very well here in in the field, at the plate and on the bases...

Nope, but I have seen his hit chart. A pretty good indication of how the outfielders played him. Maybe you should check it out. :sssh:

I've seen it too. Not good last year. I'm not sure it mattered how they played him. Lots of grounders and pop ups...

And a lot of his hits probably would have not been hits if the outfielders were playing him shallow as dmderringer was trying to indicate. You simply can't afford to play shallow in Coors Field.

That seemed to be true in 2007 ... not so last year.

Tavaras is about 3 steps up from Freel. They are pretty alike, but Tavaras is a lot better. That is just my opinion on the upgrade at leadoff, and they had Freel lead off some last year, and Tavaras is much better.

I have never been a big Sammy fan, but he could make this team better. He says nobody has offered him anything. With the steroid scandals, I'm not too surprised.
