The lifetime .331 OBP is much more meaningful than a partial season of hitting .320 ... you can be as optimistic as you want, but there's nothing about this move that helps the Reds offensively.

Actually, Taveras' ability to steal bases would work better in the lower part of the order. He would be a better player, though, if he stole 20 fewer bases a year and got on base about 20 more times.

Other than the defense and arm, they're pretty much the same player.

 

Look, it's not a bad signing. Taveras is a fine centerfielder, but hitting him in the leadoff spot won't do much to solve the Reds' problems scoring runs.

What's Taveras's arm like? I thought it was below average

I'd also like to know exactly how much this signing is for. That plays a big part to whether its a good signing or decent signing IMO

Jocketty sadi in order to do that Taveras has to get his on-base percentage close to .367 like it was in the 2007, rather than the .308 it was last season: "He needs to get back to way he was swinging the bat and getting on base a couple of years ago. Jamie Quirk, who's with us now was with Willy in Colorado, feels like Willy can get back to that."
