Coach Meyers is a great guy but I have yet to hear if he is even interested in the position this time around. Coach Meyers knows his football and could possibly turn the program back in the right direction.

 

Scott would be a very good candidate for the job but i speak with Scott often. With the addition of his son Scott feels that the demands of a head football coach are not in his family's best interest.

 

The next best choice is Nick Rice. Nick has been a dear friend of mine for a long time and I am very fortunate to know him in this capacity. Not too many people can say they played their entire careers with someone who is one of their best friends. Nick Rice holds Newport close to his heart, always had and always will. For the situation, I think Newport needs Nick Rice. He will generate an interest in a football program that has died off a little bit from what it was when Roy Lucas Sr. was there.

I think you might be correct about Scott. I talked to him back in Sept. and I kind of gathered as much from that conversation. I would think he might be interested down the road, but I know the new father thing is his priority ( as it should be!) but I would hope for Newports sake he decides to stay actively involved in the football program. The new coach would be foolish not to want Scott on his staff. He knows what it takes to play Championship caliber HS football and has all the passion and knowledge one needs to be sucessful....the question remains whether or not Newport HS wants to make the commitment to become a great team year in and year out! Hopefully one the two men discussed in this thread will get that oppurtunity and committment from the School!

Probably true for Scott and a smart move. He has a great job teaching courses at Highlands he loves to teach, he is a phenomenal Offensive line coach and has formed great relationships with his players.

 

With that said, having the pressure a Head Coach has is much different then what an offensive line coach endures. Not to mention, Newport needs somenoe to get them back on track and I dont think Scott wants that task right now. He is in too good a position to take that on.

 

Nick Rice would be a great choice. Young, vibrant, tough as nails and a great salesman for the program.

Scott Turner is not going anywhere and I don't want to here anymore of this foolish talk. He is Highlands O-line coach and that is the end of that conversation.:argue::lol:

Hope that even though Coach Hyder is stepping down that he stays at Newport as a teacher and a coach in some capacity whether it be football or baseball.

 

I hope Rice does get the job this time. Many of those reasons have been listed already. If he could get a team to workout half as hard as he ever did then there would be some awfully strong kids down there. I think the kids would like playing for him a lot too.

One thing that comes to my mind is that Newport should have a competitive team now. When you look at what their freshmen staff has put in place for the past four years you would think they should be a force in AA. Yeah I know the freshmen team had a bad season this year but they also played a tough schedule too. Newport's freshmen team has averaged 30 plus players each season. Where do they go? IMO whether you have Rice, Meyers or Turner they should be able to rebuild the program.

We wish Coach Hyder the best as he departs. I've seen a lot of names on this thread. My only hope is that a decision is made quickly so that winter workouts can start a.s.a.p. We've seen in the last year what can happen when you wait too long to name a coach.

No way! We're not letting him go anywhere. Just joking of course:D. I'm surprised not more of the coaches at HHS don't get mentioned more often when vacancies come up. Then again, I'm glad they don't. Good luck to Newport on their search.

 

They get approached very, very often. I know that from talking to them. But unless they are interested in being a head coach (and many are not because of all the increased demands that comes with the job), there aren't any other asst coaching gigs in N. Ky that are better than what they have at Highlands.

Good luck to couch Hyder. I hope Newport can find a couch soon and one who will be around for more than 2 or 3 years.

Any updates? I would think lifting would start soon.
