What would be some good candidates to fill this position?

When it comes to a young family it is tough to coach anything.

Rumor has it that Nick Rice is interested in the position. I believe he would be a good candidate to get the program headed in the right direction. Newport really needs to have a coach like Rice that will install discipline back to the program along with a staff that can produce.

 

Coach Hyder will be missed - he is a good person but when you try to produce and you don't have the support that is needed it makes for a difficult situation. Coach Hyder I wish you all the best and thank you for all you have done for Newport overall.

Rice has been Dayton's DC for the past few years, and had a year as an assistant at TMC I thought. He starred at Newport and then TMC in the 90's as a punishing LB. Very passionate about the game. Almost was hired a few times I have heard by a few different schools. He will eventually get a HC job. If it isn't this one I will be surprised. I've been hearing for awhile that Newport was interested in him...

I agree with Killercats in that Rice can isntill the discipline that is lacking in Newport's program. It can be done and Nick is the guy to do it. I hope he gets a look.

 

You look at what young coaches are doing in NKY right now with Lickert and Deaton at Holmes and Dayton and it should give the Newport Administration the confidence to hang their hat on a young cat like Rice who gave them everything he had when he was a player and bleeds black n red.

Rice IMO is the best candidate overall for the Newport program. Hyder did all he could do to build the program back to respect. However when you have to constantly deal with off the field conflicts involving some players it doesn't help the program. Newport had and has talented players - however the time has come for Newport's program to get rid of players that create conflict - basically either you want build a sucessful program or you don't. The administration needs to let their coaches in all of their programs weed out the problems and rebuild them. Nick Rice will complete a lot for Newport if given the opportunity.

He played his highschool ball for the Wildcats and has been very instrumental in churning out great O-lines year after year at Highlands. I would be very surprised if he were interested. "Little" Scottie is only a season away from being on the freshman team and I think he would like to coach his son.

I agree with you - Scott Turner is a good coach and possibly could be Dale's replacement whenever Dale chooses to retire.

I've known Nick since T-Ball. He is EXACTLY what Newport needs. The job has turned into a revolving door and it needs stability. Nick would bring that with such a positive tenacity. I've met very few people in my life that have the energy that motor mouth has. He's a great people person, he will sell the program to the kids that aren't coming out to play, and the kids on the Firefighters will love seeing him around. Personality wise think Dale Mueller at 6'2 245lbs.

What about another former Bird currently on Newports staff? I would have to believe he would also be a candidate also if he wants to be. I think Coach Meyers interviewed after Schlarman left didn't he? What are his chances........he's been there a long time and from what I hear the Kids love him, and If I know him at all (and I do) he would be a disciplinarian also.:thumb:

Coach Meyers is a great guy but I have yet to hear if he is even interested in the position this time around. Coach Meyers knows his football and could possibly turn the program back in the right direction.

No way! We're not letting him go anywhere. Just joking of course:D. I'm surprised not more of the coaches at HHS don't get mentioned more often when vacancies come up. Then again, I'm glad they don't. Good luck to Newport on their search.
