Can someone explain why basketball is so big in Kentucky?

 

I think they use the same size ones here that other states use. :laugh: It was hard to resist.

I understand that every team in the other classes can't go to the playoffs due to the numbers in those classes, but in 2A the numbers allow for all but 1 team to go, and I for one have no problem with it...

Well Kentucky is #26 in terms of population, not sure where they rank in number of high schools that play football...

So let'em all play! Let every team in the state play! That's the fair thing to do. Reward every losing team that didn't deserve to play. If you just want to practice, then practice, but why reward a team who does not deserve it? I'm sorry, if you were 0-10, 1-9, or 2-8, you a'int gett'en any better....

 

I really don't see what the problem is with all the teams getting in. All teams get into the "playoffs" (District Tournaments) in basketball. I think they all get into the playoffs in baseball. So what is the problem with everyone getting in the playoffs in football?

It can be done. States out west do it, but I believe they only play an 8 game regular season. I don't think the schools in KHSAA would be willing to give up a home gme to go to something like that.

In Ohio, you are allowed Seven Days of organized practice from June 1-July 28 (I think those are the exact dates). You also have to include passing scrimmages as a practice. Kentucky has to stop thinking about "how can they compete with other states?" and just worry about winning the next game while keeping the best interest of the kids in mind.

 

If I had it my way, you get rid of the bye week, start a week earlier, and cut the playoff spots down to the top two teams in the district. I am sorry buy KY football has way too many teams with losing records in the playoffs and the season last way too long.

 

I have coached in Ohio for five years and last year we only had three full pad/full contact practices before our first scrimmage. So no I do not believe that putting a roof on June/July practices is such a bad idea. When it comes to High School football, How many practices do you need anyways? How many plays can you possibly run? This whole thing about Kentucky competeing with whoever/whatever is just not the best foundation for the argument when discussing the amount of practices you get. Ultimately, the best way to get wins against premiere football progams is not the X's and O's, but rather the Johhny's and Joe's! Players win, not a bunch of X's and O's.

 

I was with you until that statement. If it was really only about the Jimmy's and the Joe's then I guess wherever you coach at runs 1 play on offense and 1 on defense. Why waste time running other plays?

It should be changed from "play off" which most people seem to think indicates it is earned - to "district tourn" like in basketball, baseball, softball and soccer where you progress as you win - in those sports it is called the second season - everyone starts out the same.

How many teams in 2A miss the playoffs? Answer 1. Do you have a problem with that? Does it anger you that some of those teams have a losing record? I know it doesn't bother me at all that every team but one gets to play another game, maybe it's because I understand that practicing another week and playing one more game can only make that team better...

I still don't understand why it seems to be such an absolutely horrible thing that a few teams with losing records make it. The KHSAA would undoubtedly let every team in - as in other sports - except for the fact that they don't have enough weeks to do so.

 

One of this year's finalists wouldn't have been there if these folks had their way - and SK was definitely one of the hottest teams in the state at year-end!
