KHSAA sets back KY football.....again

If they were just doing this to coddle basketball wouldn't they move the season earlier so it was done before basketball started?

Coddling basketball was a bad editorial comment.

Basketball has also been restricted to school/school competition in June only, which will make playing in out-of-town team camps very difficult from here out.

I'm not sure what the reasons were for the rules implementation, but "coddling" basketball, is certainly not one of them.

A 2-9 team does not deserve to be in the playoffs. They did nothing to deserve the 48-0 beating that they took. You have teams sitting at home that are WAY better, who finished with .500 records and could have beat many or most of the teams in the playoffs, these are the teams who deserved to get a chance to practice, not a 2-9, 1-9, or 0-10 team like we have seen this year. There is zero logic to awarding a team a playoff spot for mediocrity (I'm sorry, 2-9 is not mediocrity, my bad).

If a 2-9 team gets to play, but a 5-5, or in some cases 6-4 team stays home, then let them all play. Play a 4 game season and then start the playoffs..... That makes about as much sense as we have seen over the past couple of years and the 6 divisions is only making it worse. This year it was horrible football over the first weekend of the playoffs....

How many teams in 2A miss the playoffs? Answer 1. Do you have a problem with that? Does it anger you that some of those teams have a losing record? I know it doesn't bother me at all that every team but one gets to play another game, maybe it's because I understand that practicing another week and playing one more game can only make that team better...

So let'em all play! Let every team in the state play! That's the fair thing to do. Reward every losing team that didn't deserve to play. If you just want to practice, then practice, but why reward a team who does not deserve it? I'm sorry, if you were 0-10, 1-9, or 2-8, you a'int gett'en any better....

Doesn't apply to the 2-9 team I'm talking about, the only team that got left out of the 2A playoff's was 1-9. There was no 5-5 or 6-5 team left out.

Just plain silly...

While I may not agree with the tone I do agree with the sentiment. The teams that are excluded now from the playoffs are left out simply because of geography and the number of teams in a given area. Either make all teams earn their way into the playoffs based on results on the field or let them all in.

Just plain silly...

I agree, wait till next year and change what you did this year in order to get better...

I agree- it was not "coddling" but "cooperation" between the two sports and their coaches associations. The coaches of both sports worked on it together.

To my understanding, part of the reason behind the agreement(June: basketball team events, no football team events; July: football team events, no basketball team events) was to avoid conflicts between the two sports helping the coaches and helping the athletes to be able to play both sports.

At our qb camp, one of our campers was doing all 3 sports(baseball included) the month of June. The dad told me that June was the toughest/worst month of the year for the young man. He was trying to improve, keep all of his coaches happy, be a good teammate, etc.

If a kid is a one sport guy, he can go to individual camps during the off month and continue to work out with his team- just no outside team competition. Our football players use June to go to individual camps. It is a great setup- they can still do football, but they need a break from being around me. Our kids begin working with us July 10. We are nose to nose until school starts. Then they have their coaches in regular classes, weight class, practice, etc. After the season, they still have their coaches for weight class, regular classes, spring practice, etc. By June- our kids need a break from us.

The positives outweigh the negatives in benefitting the kids.

Will there be anything early in the calendar year that prevents non-baseball time?

Will there be anything early in the calendar year that prevents non-baseball time?

I don't know. My best guess is no.

In a lot of instances, baseball is the sport that hurts football with summer practices. The only thing about the rules, is the fact that AAU basktball and summer/american legion baseball isn't governed by the KHSAA. IMO this is where football gets behind the eight ball.

What’s the big deal about teams making the playoffs with a losing record? I know that the team I follow (Monroe Co) played in a playoff game last year with a 2-9 record and got beat 48-0, I KNOW that playoff game helped to make them better and inspired them to work harder in the off-season and they did, they followed that 2-9 season by going 12-2 and winning the region...

If getting in by a gift and taking a 48-0 thrashing was a motivator to them, how much more of a motivation would sitting at home because they didn't deserve to play be?

Can someone explain why basketball is so big in Kentucky?

Because of the University of Kentucky, Adolph Rupp, Cawood Ledford, sweet 16 ect...Back in the day, every boy growing up in KY wanted to be a bball player because UK basketball was so big.

In the last 20 years, IMO high school football has caught and surpassed high school basketball in the state.

Can someone explain why basketball is so big in Kentucky?

...on the 8th day, God created Kentucky and said "with this Basketball, it is good"...
