December 16, 200817 yr This is correct. Scarheel doesn't provide his location, but the strip mine and the elk make me think he is well inside the restoration zone. Therefore if this is true, only lucky lottery winners will get to take a poke at those elk. If Scarheel is indeed outside the restoration counties, then he could run down to the county clerk's office, pick up an out-of-zone elk tag, and run back up and collect his meat for the winter. People often don't believe you can take an elk at arm's length, but his pictures show they aren't exactly a wary majestic critter. It'll take some hunting pressure to put the fear in them. I am inside a restoration zone which is Leslie County. I can get so close that I would not even want to try and kill one of those elk because it would not even be a challenge. Well, okay, maybe just 1 because I hear the meat tastes outstanding, lol. BTW, why are certain counties considered restoration zones? Only because there is such a population of these animals in certain counties (Leslie, Knott, Perry etc) that it would be to easy or what?

Only because there is such a population of these animals in certain counties (Leslie, Knott, Perry etc) that it would be to easy or what? Those are the areas that the original herd was "released" in. Those were the target areas the KDFW wanted to repopulate. Obviously the elk don't know county lines and nature takes it's course.

Curious, are there a lot of car accidents involving elk??? Are they destructive of crops??? Much poaching going on??? Previous to Spencer bagging this elk on Sunday, I didn't even know that Kentucky had elk. I fish Canada on a regular basis and going up I-75 through Northern Michigan there is a sign with a radio station that you get information on the Michigan Elk herd - only one I knew of. Obviously those in Kentucky are thriviing.

Obviously those in Kentucky are thriving. Not any car wrecks involving elk here. They will occasionally stray off the mountain and roam around the roads but have not caused any accidents. I have seen 1 or 2 stand in the middle of the road and walk circles do to a "worm" in their brain or whatever that disease is. Not heard of any accidents though. I have heard of them being destructive to crops but it's not a very common thing. Yes, unfortunately, poaching does go on around these parts. Not a lot but it does happen.

The state biologists want 1000 tags issued, but some of the commission members are fighting it so that whacking an elk can be an exclusive club that's hard to get into. There are plenty of animals and to keep the herd at the desired numbers, they need to thin them out, and the biologists say 1000 is the number right now. Seems they are the ones that should know. Knott Co. and Floyd Co. have had several serious auto accidents. In the late winter and early spring the elk come down off the strip jobs and start eating in yards, orchards, and garden areas and wandering around in the roads. They get into trouble and cause hard feelings.

If so, where they also introduced into Eastern Kentucky??? What is the status on the Western Ky elk??? Did they catch on there, are they hunted, or did they all migrate east???

January 4, 200917 yr I have put in for the draw every year since the first one and unfortunately have not been drawed. I also enter Ferg every year too because he loves to hunt when he is not on the court which is very rare!!!!!!!!!! Maybe one of us will get lucky this year!!!!!!!!!!
