Riley is the key this year, as long as he shoots the way he is. IMO, Holmes is better this year than they will be next year. Still not sure Holmes is as good as they were last year with Henderson, but the season has a long way to go.

 

I'm not ready to concede the 9th to Holmes. If the ninth is one of the top 3 regions in the state, why couldn't someone give them a game? What if 2 of their starters, say Pittman and Riley, foul out in a game?

 

I agree with you that through out the year teams from the 9th can push Holmes and even beat them. But [iMO] not in the 9th region tournament. That is quickly turning into the Bulldog Invitational.

Final tidbit on this game would be that Flannery transferring to Scott County was not a wise choice. I didnt think he was looked to by Hicks to contribute much yesterday. I think he would have been better served staying at Boone Co and making them a BIG TIME team. With Popp and Gabbard at the 1-2 and Flannery playing the 3. McFarland at the 4 and Earls at 5. Wow !!! Oh well.

Flannery probably hasn't helped his cause with his shot selection. Against Duncanville, he fired up a quick three less than 10 seconds after he entered the game, prompting Hicks to yank him out of there quicker that he can snap to a referee.

 

On the Scott County-Holmes webcast, the crew reported that Hicks put Phares back in the game with two fouls with about 35 seconds left in the first half, apparently intending to work the clock for a final shot and maybe get the ball inside. Flannery fired up another quick three, prompting the announcers to proclaim that his shot probably wasn't what the Cardinals wanted.

Well sure, I could paint you lots of made-up scenarios in which someone could give Holmes a game. But, generally speaking, it would take some kind of unusual scenario for someone to stay with them. Frankly, I see the other 9th teams falling into foul trouble against Holmes as they try to keep up with Holmes' speed. I guess we'll see as it plays out. I predict no one stays within 20 points of them.

 

That's the only point I'm making. Unlikely, but possible. Probably a 10% chance.

 

I don't think they will win every game by 20+ in the 9th. Even with their talent, they are bound to have an off night or letdown, just as they did against NCC last year.

I think all of Riley's threes were pretty open except one. I know that Guyn was guarding him on at least 2-3 of the shots. How many assists and turnovers did Riley have?

Agree that AAU has nothing to do with high school. I was responding to the assertion that no 5 players in NKY could play with Holmes 5. I was responding for the 2010 players since I've never seen a mixture of 2010 and 2009 NKY allstar players play Holmes 2009 and 2010 players.

 

And we were responding to the fact that SS beat KY Players but that you failed to mention they beat Holmes JUNIOR AND SOPHOMORE CLASS (excludes Riley, Housely, and D. Johnson) by only 4, having a nky all star team, Middleton, Botkin, as well as a few others from around the state.

 

I think Cooperstown is right in saying no NKY all star team would beat this Holmes group.

 

Take Riley's 5-6 shooting from 3 away from last night's game, and you could have a different outcome too. He can't shoot 80% indefinitely out there.

Ok but he (Guyn) transferred in from a Lexington HS last year. So you have Manning who will be good and Phares. Lets talk about others who grew up in the Scott Co Feeder system.

Wow, I thought the earlier comment that he has only missed five shots this year was being made somewhat facetiously. Honestly, you couldn't find many players that could stand in practice without any defender on them and knock down three's at the rate he has so far. :lol:

I think this was the kid that threw the 5th grade pass out top against the swarming Holmes Defense. Ball fake and bounce pass, ball fake and bounce pass I kept thinking.

As far as Holmes and the 9th region...Covcath coach Listerman said it best:

 

"It's going to take an off night for the Bulldogs, and a team to play their best game of the year to knock off Holmes..."

 

Given the talent that Holmes had, I'd say those off nights are going to be VERY rare.

 

I personally think Highlands will give Holmes their best game of the year in the 9th though. Boone will try to run with Holmes and find themselves down quick and having to shoot 3's to stay in the game which will lead to long rebounds and easy transition points for Holmes.

Probably just nervous and anxious to make an impact. He's a great shooter. Shame we don't get to watch him up here in NKY on a regular basis.

Not made up at all. Riley has only missed 5 shots all year and scary part about this is that only one of those shots was a 3 pointer. He is 14-15 from behind the arc.

I had the opportunity to meet some very nice people from SC last night (one of whom is an older gentleman who puts on the Toyota Classic), and before they left I told them I'd be seeing them again in an even bigger arena later in the season. :thumb:

From what I saw he shouldn't be one of the top players in the state, much less the nation.

 

Can the NKY faithful tell me if I'm wrong here? Is he better than Brennan Votel? Is he better than Greg Rice? Is he better than Travis Rasso or Any Earls?

 

No way. All these bigmen mentioned were better than what I saw on the floor last night from Euton.

 

I agree he has alot of work to do, but those players you mentioned never went up against the talent that Euton has. There was decent talent when those guys played in the 9th, but none like this Holmes bunch. So, to answer your question, I still take Euton over all those guys, including Rice.

Middleton and Botkin did not play on the SS team that beat the Players this summer, and the both teams only had juniors, but I'm not going to belabor the point.

 

Avery shot very well, but 1 assist and 3 turnovers is not generating many points from a point guard perspective. I'd say he is one of the best SHOOTING guards in the state, but not sure about all-around, including defense.
