November 30, 200817 yr Bad hire for UT! Good hire for UK!!!!:ylsuper::ylsuper: Maybe now we can beat them next year with Fulmer out of the way. Why do you think it is a bad hire for UT? I disagree with you. I think it will work out for the Vols. It doesn't matter who is the coach UK can't beat the Vols.
November 30, 200817 yr Had Bowling Green not gone out on a limb and hired an unproven, long-time assistant coach Urban Meyer, neither Utah nor Florida may have had national championship titles nor runs at a title. Had Texas Tech not gone out on a limb and hired an unproven, long-time assistant coach Mike Leach, they would probably not have the exciting football that is being played in Lubbock this season. Had Grand Valley State not gone out on a limb and hired an unproven, former assistant coach Brian Kelly, then neither Central Michigan nor Cincinnati might be having the successes they have had. Had Appalachian State not gone out on a limb and hired an unproven, long-time assistant coach Mack Brown, then Tulane, North Carolina, and Texas might not have had all the great recruiting and successes they have had. Great Head Coaches were all previously unproven assistant coaches who it was just a matter of time before they got their opportunity to shine. You say that Tennessee should have gone with a proven winner........they did, just one without head coaching experience. Lane Kiffin will shine in Knoxville. Great post I agree with you 100%
November 30, 200817 yr Mort says that Lane Kiffin will be coming to Knoxville and that Peyton Manning was consulted about UT hiring Kiffin and gave Kiffin a thumbs up.
November 30, 200817 yr I think that the only thing that could stop Lane Kiffin from becoming the next head coach of UT is if Al Davis becomes the Athletic Director. Later.
November 30, 200817 yr No matter who it is the UT fans are not going to be happy with an average season next year. He is going to have an uphill battle.
November 30, 200817 yr It appears that Monte could leave Tampa Bay and join his son as defensive coordinator at Tennessee. That brings a tough, tough defensive scheme. Monte would take a fairly large pay cut if he decides to do it. Add in Ed Orgeron, and the recruiting at Tennessee could be huge.
November 30, 200817 yr http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3735102 Looks like Monte is going with him, if you trust ESPN.

You made my point, about not understanding as the Colleges you list, aren't at the level Tennessee has been consistently for decades. There is a major difference, in getting your start somewhere and advancing, then landing at program like the 'Vols. They must have saw something they like in Kiffin, it just surprises me.

I read the other day in the paper that Dave Clawson isn't coming back next year.

Monte Kiffin makes about 2 million a year as Tampa's defensive architect. The way they are slinging money around in Knoxville (a 6 million buyout for Philip Fulmer and a ton more for the assistant coaches), I am sure they will have a nice financial package for Monte Kiffin as well.
November 30, 200817 yr Is Ed Orgeron coming with him? Who is going to be the OC? I read the other day in the paper that Dave Clawson isn't coming back next year. From what I hear, Orgeron is in the plan somehow. Add that with the "NFL experience" of Monte and Lane, and the recruiting ability of Orgeron and you could have a recruiting machine in Tennessee. I think with the right assistants, and Monte is a great start, this hire will be very, very nice. Now, I am not sure if Lane is ready for this job, but it appears he is surrounding himself with the right people.

I agree with the questions you have, but Lane Kiffin is a star waiting to shine. He is young, energetic, personable, and has been around the game his whole life. He is a proven outstanding recruiter and a very innovative offensive mind. If his father Monte Kiffin is part of this package and will handle the defense, it appears to me this is just what the Vol nation is looking for. He has an outstanding coaching pedigree with his father being, arguably, the top assistant in the NFL who has not wanted to be a head coach
