It comes from the 144,000 surrounding the throne in Revelation (Chapter 7?). They take the number literally to mean that many will 'make it to heaven.' The rest of the believers will inherit the newly sanctified earth.

 

Of course Pre-millenial Dispensationalist also use a literal reading of the 144,000 but attach that number to Jews who are converted during the period of time they call the Tribulation that, in their thinking, occurs after a "rapture coming" of Jesus to take the saints out prior to the Tribulation. :confused:

Whenever The Witnesses come to my door I ask them if they have ever thought about becoming Catholic , Invite them to Sunday Mass and try to give them literature on the teachings and beliefs of the Catholic Church . BTW I'd probably do the same thing If AL came to my door .

 

I spent a good hour chatting with two very nice young men who came to my door one day. :lol: I told them I was Catholic, that I, and both of my kids had atteneded Catholic schools from the time we started, till we graduated 12th grade. It only served to make them more determined to convince me of the errors of my ways. They finally left when I explained that I was going to a Trinity football game. I wondered if they realized then that I was beyond conversion. :lol: However, standing at the bus stop several days later, the same two young gentlemen came upon me and remembered me, and gave it thier best shot again. I was on my way to work at that point, so I had a less "Catholic" reason for leaving the conversation. But, I commended them for their committment. They were both very polite and congenial. I wished them well in their quest, but explained (again) that I was firm in my beliefs. It's really very hard to be rude to the people who spend so much of their time going door to door. They definitely are firm in their beliefs, and although insistent, they are very polite.

No...they were Jehovah Witnesses. There's a church over on Eastern Parkway, only a few blocks from here.

We had two Mormon girls living in an apartment next door for a while. I think it was probably during their mission time, however long that lasts. Anyway, they did try to sway us...but very gently. They came over and chatted now and then, and even made cookies a couple times. Not sure if that's right out of their "conversion manual" or not; but they were good.

 

The cookies, that is.

I have personally known several Mormans. They ALL have been fabulous people.

 

I do not personally know any Jehovah's Witnesses.

I know several folks who are JW and Mormon. All fine people. Has nothing to do with their religious beliefs. Just sayin'....

They called this morning wanting to come by. I was walking out the door. Might try on wednesday to meet.

 

Now here is the thing....I have already told them I cannot be changed. My Bible has been studied and studied. The verses I've studied shows Jesus is God's son sent to earth as a human and in essance is God. Thats why he is God and can do anything he wants. "When you have seen me, you have seen the Father"

 

Also I found a verse that says call no one your Father except the one in Heaven.

 

I want to see their Bible. John chapter 8 a lot of them John 10:20 from memory.

 

They say there is no hell....Luke 16:19 and thats Jesus talking.

 

But why are they wasting their time with me? I asked Momma this morning "shouldn't they go to a younger person where they may have a chance to sway them to their way of thinking?"

I actually had the same thing with two guys at my house. I thanked them and acknowledged their commitment. Then offered to pray with them, they refused and would not even be willing to stay if I prayed to myself! That seems to make them want to leave very quickly. You might give that a try!

My question is more self centered.

 

If there are only 144,000 making it into Heaven, then why in the world would you spend so much time out recruiting more people? That's just bad business and creates too much competition. I know there are a lot better people out there than me, so the more folks we convert, the worse my chances would get.

 

I'd keep it a secret to anyone who isn't already on my team. And for those who are on my team, I'd be trying to weed out everyone who I thought was better than me to increase my odds. Then I'd try to discourage all the people I don't like so I'd hopefully be able to spend eternity in peace.

I have a long and illustrious background with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Point in fact, I have probably read more Book of Mormon, Pearl of Great Price, and Doctrine and Covenants than Holy Bible (all told). I always invite the missionaries on the porch for a cool sasparilla, but they have now learned that I am not a fruitful stopping point.

I'll admit to knowing very little about this religion. Where does the 144K come from? I'm sure that it is just not some random number, is it?

I once told them that I was Catholic and they never came back to my house anymore. I should have invited them to a Friday Fish Fry!
