pretty smart in my book.

I agree, live game experience is better than in practice. You never know down the road when you got to have an offside kick. Practice makes perfect.

I seem to remember Boyle taking flack for this some in the Chuck Smith days and it paid off big in the Hoptown semi-final in '01. :thumb:

I wouldn't fault Bell's stragegy on this at all.

Well, statman the reason they kicked the first one was because Rock returned the opening second half kickoff to the Bell 30 yard line, which in turn resulted in Rock's only score of the night. They were succesful on the first attempt and a personal foul on Rock for hitting the Bell kicker late after Bell's 4th touchdown gave Bell the ball on the 45 yard line. Quite simply a no brainer. The worst case would put Rock on their 30-35 yard line. If Bell was succesful and they were, then it would most definetly be lights out/fat lady singing. So it was not Bell trying to run the score up, it was quite simply the basic rules of coaching/playing football 101.

Rule 13

I understand your frustration papagrit but 2 personal fouls on Bell 2nd half. First one was called when Rockcastle threw a pass in the flats and was deflected and Bell's free saftey unloaded on him while ball was in the air, legal hit, wrong call by the official. The second one was stupid on the Bell kids behalf. But he was sent to the sideline. Rock had at least 3 personal fouls that were just simply intentional and meant to hurt Bell kids. I sure would hate to see Rock get the reputation that Knox has.

Listen, I have seen it go both ways each year. I can show you a dozen late hits and what looks like intentional hits from Bell County in the past 15 years on tape also. It is a heated rivalry, I don't honestly don't think the kids are going out there and hitting them late to hurt them, it is just emotions that they have built up over the last week of preparation for a huge rival, this goes for both teams. Like I said don't just point out that last night Rock tried to hurt players on purpose, both teams have had thier fair share of cheap licks, I can recall 3 off the top of my head last year in the playoff game alone. It happens, it is Bell vs. Rock.:thumb: By the way, I'm not condoning it, just making an obeservation of the last 25+ games they have played each other.

3 wishes I am well aware of emotion and how easy it is to get wrapped up in a game like Rock and Bell. But don't even attempt to try to tell me that I didn't hear the Rock coach tell # 6 to take Merrick out. Yes, I agree some hits can seem to be dirty when really all it was/is kids playing hard. After reading Tom Landry's post today he reminded me of the same kid hitting Merrick late,in the back at Rockcastle this year during their first meeting. Then last night after I heard the Rock coach tell him to take him out, I knew it was intentional. In my previous post to paragrit, I was only stating the facts on the 2 personal foul calls on Bell. The first one was the wrong call, simply the ball was deflected and the Bell free saftey came over and hit the intended receiver, legal hit wrong call against Bell. The second one was the correct call against Bell. But the three personal foul penalties on Rock were correct calls. My point being that paragrit was making accusations that the officials cheated for Bell. How ironic this old game of football is. As I was discussing the game today with several Bobcat fans, it seems the hit the Bell free Safety put on the Rock kid was the same kid that tried to intentionally hurt Merrick. What is that old saying? what goes around comes around! The only difference was the Bell coaches didn't instruct their kids to hurt anyone.

Obviously I was not there to see any of what was going on but why would you onside kick the ball two or three times in the second half after have already scored when it seemed obviously that the game was in hand?

Like I said I was not there and am just asking this question as someone who had read the update thread here on BGP.

Footballs were hard and cold last night...like rock. In temperatures like last night the kickoffs do not carry nearly as far as normal. Merrick had 94% of his kicks prior to Friday night out of the endzone. Due to the respect that Bell has for the quick Rockcastle return men....that is why the kick. The penalty came into the mix....Merrick could sky it out of the back of endzone...or catch them off guard. Rock is Rock. Bell respects them. It was 14-0 at half. Rock returns...and then scores off return field position...now it is 14-7! Bell scores and then it is now 21-7...still a close game with Rock always....then Bell does their first onside...successfully...and then does it a second time in a row to put game up 35-7. That is not to pile it on...it is just a better strategy than a pooch kick on the kickoff. Needless to say it worked quite well....swung the momentum totally to Bell and shut down the Rockets for good. Ironically, I believe that Merrick hit the next kickoff a mile and out of the endzone!

Just another case of Dudley wanting to run it up............

Thought that was difficult with the cold, hard football?

It is...but once in a while he hits a 75 yard plus kick out of the back of the endzone in the air.....that is not happening on a regular basis during the cold spell. He just creamed that one....adrenaline comes into play. Previous kick had fallen short and was returned...setting up the score that put Rock within one TD. Rock is to be respected.....Dudley did not run up the score....he had to win a playoff game. Bell leading Rockcastle 28-7 is not time to put in the JV. That is when the SECOND onside kick came. It was good strategy and totally swung the game for good....which is what one and done playoffs is all about! Score was then 35-7 and then the JV finished down the stretch.

I think I hit a nerve on mtn mafi.....

I understand that this year it is probably hard not to run up the score, but to alot on the outside it would seem that Bell likes to run it up. My first comment was probably uncalled for and I apologize.

I will pull for Knox Central next week but expect Bell to win. I will then pull for Bell in the next 2 games. Probably more than y'all will do for Corbin......

I want Corbin to do vey well. I hope they beat Prestonsburg next week and continue to do well. Ive made my problem with Corbin known, but that doesn't make me hate them. Shoot I never get to see them play any more and I can't comment on anything they do on the fied.

Contrary to what you think Campbellfield I have pulled for Corbin for Many years, except when they played Bell. I have had a cousin playing on Corbin's team for the past 4 years. Yes, your comment about coach Hilton was uncalled for. I know many of the kids on the Redhound team and my son has made some good friends with many of them over the years. I have attened a few Corbin games over the last 4 years to support my cousin, inturn means I supported the redhounds. I will be pulling for you because when we get to Louisville, I hope Corbin is there, because I am going to make you belly up at the concession stand and buy me a rootbeer!

Apology accepted....I too typed a response...then deleted it...glad I did. By the way, Bell Co. fans for the most part miss the rivalry with Corbin....and have always pulled for Corbin in the playoffs...as well as all Mountain teams to go all the way to the Pizza Bowl!! Good luck to the Redhounds! As for running up score...Dudley does not do that, in spite of popular opinion otherwise. He even had freshmen get intentional illegal procedure for four straight downs on the one yard line against one opponent because they agreed to play Bell....and then in games this year....has let Merrick kick on first down.....declined a pass interference on one yd. line to set up a sixty yard record attempt FG. JV has scored a lot of points this season and starters have sat out second half in several games.

When did Rock kick two extra points in the last two years against Bell??? It is totally uncalled for to hit a kicker/punter after the kick, he is unprotected and very vunerable. It was a bush league move to the 900th degree.

On the fumble recovery the player was clearly down. It is not NFL you can't get off the ground and run. Besides that he was touched while he was down so even in the NFL he was down!!!!!!!! Look at the film it does not lie.

Rock played very hard and is still one of the top 5 teams in 4A. I applaude the group of seniors they have very tough kids. #22 has been a tough little nut for a few years. I wish them luck in life. Coach Parkey did a good job in his first year and Rock was Rock. Bell is just better in all phases.

No, that wasn't what I meant. There were two late hits by Bell in the second half that were flagged. Not that we took two late hits to our kicker. I agree that a late hit on a kicker isn't acceptable. One of those late hits was on the kid that was in question on the late kicker hit in the first half.
