November 14, 200817 yr I'm really torn on this one. 1st, I recognize that the baby did nothing wrong so why should it's life be forfeit. That said I also recognize that forcing a woman to carry a child that was the result of rape to term would be extremely traumatic if not cruel. I also recognize that in the case of rape the woman did nothing willingly that caused her pregnancy. This is where I am on the rape issue. I am more no the fence for this topic then just about any. Rebecca Kiessling Conceived in Rape- from Worthless to Priceless Here is a letter from her birthmother: LETTER FROM MY BIRTHMOTHER My Dearest Rebecca, Hoping by now that the shock of finding out all the details of your birth is forgotten. For that was not reason enough of having to give something up as beautiful as you were. Nothing as precious as a baby. Mostly when you carry one nine months and you go through the birth feeling no one loves you, but you were so perfect and pretty. All these years I had nothing of you, no picture, nothing even saying you were part of me. Just the memory of carrying a baby that I hoped one day would try to find her real mother as I wanted to know my baby. I always loved you in my heart. You were always with me in my thoughts, mostly in July. . . . . It seems like a lifetime I know. When I was sick two years ago I thought I would never get to know my little girl.. . . . Would you please see if you could get me a copy of the letter you sent to the Oakland County Judge? It made me cry. Also I would like copies of your poems. These are things I would like to read. . . . .Its been a long three weeks. Looking forward to our meeting. I didn't know how to express my inner feelings. IT'S SO GREAT -- BIG BEAUTIFUL -- ITS ALWAYS BEEN MY DREAM. I AM SO HAPPY I AM CRYING. A love that ate at me for nineteen years, my daughter at last. With love, your Mom, Joann
November 14, 200817 yr The bottom line is this. I ask a question on something that can and does happen. Now, I have heard a lot of what if's and different spins. In my honest opinion, I believe there is a lot of folks who say they would do one thing, but if it came down to it, most would save their wife. First of all, many have tried to answer, but apparently they didn't fit into the trap you were trying to set, so you ignored their answer. Secondly, it's not an accurate question. Saving the life of a mother (and having the death of a baby) is not an abortion. Abortion is intentionally killing a baby. You take it out of the womb, and use a variety of practices, including sticking a scissor into its head and carving the brain out. When the life of the mother is in danger, you remove the baby and do everything possible to save the child's life. If there is nothing you can do to save the infant, then you have commited an abortion?

I will pay your BGP dues if you can provide me with ONE documented case of a mother who was at the hospital to deliver her full-term baby that had to have an abortion to save her life. Just 1 case.

That said I also recognize that forcing a woman to carry a child that was the result of rape to term would be extremely traumatic if not cruel. I also recognize that in the case of rape the woman did nothing willingly that caused her pregnancy. I'm not a woman so of course I can't possibly fathom the mental anguish over it. I've had a client who was raped and aborted the child, and another who was raped and gave birth to the child. Their stories are incredible. After long and hard thought in the past about this, it has simply come down to Hebrews 11:1 for me and, simplistic though it is, the old mantra that two wrongs don't make a right.

And yes, if you have to save one or the other and it's the mother, then thats aborting the unborn child.

In your scenerio the goal of any health care professional would be to save both the mother and the infant. Therefore if either dies due to complications it is not abortion nor is it murder.
November 15, 200817 yr Author In your scenerio the goal of any health care professional would be to save both the mother and the infant. Therefore if either dies due to complications it is not abortion nor is it murder. I know that. Allow me to go back to post #1. If your wife is in the delivery room giving berth and the Dr. tells you she isn't going to make it "unless" she has an abortion, what are you going to say?

If your wife is in the delivery room giving berth and the Dr. tells you she isn't going to make it "unless" she has an abortion, what are you going to say? I don't think the doctor would give abortion as a choice, but as HHSDad pointed out an emergency C-section.
November 15, 200817 yr I'd tell my wife that I love her, and that I will take care of our child very well after she is gone. I'm sure she would concur.
November 15, 200817 yr Author If you are not going to believe them when they say what they would do, why would you ask the question? I believe two people have said the child lives and I didn't say I don't believe those two people, a lot more have said the wife. And, there's been a few who just aren't sure in my opinion. I asked the question because it's a very big issue and I was curious to see a % of folks who had a answer one way or another.
November 15, 200817 yr I just think a child has a lot more to offer the world than an adult. I'd give my life for your child, let alone mine. Parents should be willing to make sacrifices. If my wife chose her life over her child, I'd end up losing both cause she wouldn't be my wife much longer.
November 15, 200817 yr So 94% of the babies who are killed through abortions that are nothing more than birth control is okay? Since most pro life people believe abortion is murder, would you expect them to feel any other way? I don't like abortion used as a birth control either, but I will stay pro-choice because I don't think I should be the one to choose that a woman should die. I think she should have the choice to live or die when her life is in danger.
November 15, 200817 yr So in the happy event that a situation similiar to this happened, and your wife asked that they do all they can to save the baby up to the point of which it would kill her, and thank God they both live, you'd divorce your wife? Wow. I just think a child has a lot more to offer the world than an adult. I'd give my life for your child, let alone mine. Parents should be willing to make sacrifices. If my wife chose her life over her child, I'd end up losing both cause she wouldn't be my wife much longer.
November 15, 200817 yr I'm pro life. If I was raped, or anyone I know was raped, and became pregnant due to it, I would totally support an abortion. A child should not be born into those circumstances and the person who was raped should not have to suffer that. I would not want my first child (or any child for that matter) a product of rape. Sorry. These situations account for VERY FEW, meaning like 1%, of all abortions. The overwhemling majority of abortions are due to irresponsible people who are terminating the life of a baby for selfish reasons and could not take proper measures to prevent the pregnancy in the first place. And I'd like to add because I have seen this said here on the boards, and other places, but using the birth control pills, or condoms, or whatever are NOT anywhere even in the same realm of what an abortion is.
