November 14, 200817 yr Maybe a valid arguement for the very small precentage of abortions that might be preformed due to this circumstance, however, the overwelming majority of abortions are preformed merly due to convenience and this scenerio does nothing to justify those henious acts. Agreed, but his question is one about that very small percentage.
November 14, 200817 yr I'm not disagreeing at all, but some do. Say the decision is not made at birth, but earlier in the pregnancy? That either one will die if birth is given, at that point my wife will have quite the say so. I'd have to defer to her, but I would be using every ounce of persuasion to keep her.
November 14, 200817 yr I know this is and probably will still be a very big issue long after I'm gone. My feelings are very mixed because of one big problem. I'm sure it's been mentioned, but here's my question: If your wife is in the delivery room giving berth and the Dr. tells you she isn't going to make it unless she has an abortion, what are you going to say? For the record, this is a no brainer for me. I'm keeping my wife alive. While this is the argument flag that so many pro-choice people make, let's be clear on what this argument is. Latest stats show that this is about 6% of the abortions. Another 4-5% are rapes. Meaning about 10 out of every abortion fits these scenarios. So, about 90 babies are aborted for reasons for convenience.
November 14, 200817 yr I'm not married, so I guess I don't have the same perspective as many of you, but from what I've been told by my parents, it wouldn't be a question. The child lives. That's not always a bad thing:D

For the record, this is a no brainer for me. I'm keeping my wife alive. I think you tried to ask a serious question, but there is not an answer. To me, an induced abortion is an action with full intent to prevent a baby from being born. An abortion would be to extract the baby from the womb, and stick a scissor into its head and removing the brain to prevent it from living. I would tell the doctor to do whatever possible to keep my wife alive, even if that includes removing the baby from the womb immediately. But every action must be taken to keep the baby alive as well. If the medical staff does everything in their power to allow the baby to live, is that an induced abortion? Absolutely not. Our intent is not to kill a child.

So what if an issue is found early in the pregnancy, and you are told your wifes life may be in jeopardy if the fetus is carried full term? To end the pregnancy at that point is an abortion correct?
November 14, 200817 yr So what if an issue is found early in the pregnancy, and you are told your wifes life may be in jeopardy if the fetus is carried full term? To end the pregnancy at that point is an abortion correct? Tricky question, but I'd say no. Babies are born prematurely all the time, everything must be done to save his life. If there is nothing that can be done, than so be it. But the intent must never to be to kill. If a woman's life is danger, it has become a medical issue. From the other perspective, I don't see a miscarriage as an abortion.

So are you saying 10% of abortions are Ok and the other 90 aren't? Please don't take me the wrong way here. This is one issue I really don't have too much of an opinion on, I am just finding the debate intriguing.

This is why I believe it's so hard to just say pro life and nothing else matters. Also, if you aren't married and have never been married, this probably isn't the question for you.

November 14, 200817 yr During each of her pregnancys, my wife under no uncertain terms has made it very clear that in the event of a problem it is her wish that the baby's well being is considered primary.

I would easily sacrifice my life for any of the three (wife and children). Mal, first post is very unfair at least to me. I have taken on this debate and been very frank and forthcoming on it for a great while. I have been very transparent that it is the FIRST reason I decide on political candidates at the national and state level. There are many posters on here who could tell you my position in this debate as well as I could. I was not saying anything just reciting stats. The prochoice hold the rape and mother's life banners up and give the impression that that is the a good number of abortions that occur. And that is NOT the case. I wanted everyone to be clear when they are discussing this issue, exactly what they are discussing. A scenario that occurs 6% of the time. And let's add that just because "the mother's life was in danger" label is placed on the scenario, I do not believe that the mother would have probably died in many of those cases.

Don't want to be unfair. Can you tell us your stance on abortion in the 10% that you claim? Do you consider these abortions murder as you do the 90% that you say are for "convenience". I really think that is the original premise of this thread.
November 14, 200817 yr My wife and I had been married 18 years without having a child when we became pregnant and we indeed had this very real discussion more that once prior to delivering our child and both my wife and I said the baby must live! My life would have been over with if my wife (remember 18 years of being married to this wonderful woman) had died in child birth, but the child deserved to have a chance to live a life, just as my wife had a chance to live hers. BTW both my wife and daughter were sent to the ICU after the birth! My wife with a infection and a fever of 104 and my daughter? Her Apgar score was a three and a six, so the talk that we had during those months of pregnancy, were very real to us. Of course as those who know us, understand that everything turned out great but unlike a lot of births ours wasn't something I would want to go through again and those first 16/24 hours were the worst that I have ever lived through.
