That's so funny, because last night I started to post a thread asking for mystery novel ideas. I'm not much of a reader, but lately had the urge to try reading some mystery novels. But I really wanted to start with one of the classics. Any suggestions along those lines?

 

 

Well, let's see....are you looking for murder mystery, international intrigue, detective mystery???? Agatha Christie is great and a classic. You could always do the Sherlock Homes route.

I should admit up front that I'm the Rain Man of the literary set. If you can name it, I probably haven't read it.

 

Agatha Christie was what I was leaning toward. I've seen some films based on her work. Yes, I know that's cheating...but it got me through 8th grade Lit. class. Ahh, Mrs. Hall...God rest her evil little soul.

I should admit up front that I'm the Rain Man of the literary set. If you can name it, I probably haven't read it.

I'd recommend Muder on the Orient Express, but I really think my favorite is The Mirror Crak'd.

I read The Republic again last weekend. So, yes.

I have been reading quite a bit lately.

 

A little bit ago I read Women by Charles Bukowski. It is probably my favorite of his. I now only have two of his novels left before I've read them all. I'm also reading The Most Beautiful Woman in Town a collection of his short stories and Love is a Dog From Hell a poetry collection of his. Both have proved to be just as good as his novels.

 

Recently I have read Snuff by Chuck Palahniuk. While very good it is one of his lesser works.

 

I just finished The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove by Christopher Moore. If you like a good laugh I suggest you pick up any book by him. He is one of the few authors I can say are truly laugh out loud funny.

 

I have read it several times before, but I just finished reading Father and Son by Larry Brown. It can be an emotionally hard read, but it is excellent.

 

Another re-read I finished recently was The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler. I don't read many detective/mystery books, but I love this book, I definitely plan on reading some more of his work soon.

 

I'm sure I'm forgetting some I've read in the last few weeks, but the last that comes to mind is the book I finished today, About a Boy. As I said in the other thread, I really like his books, kinda like a chick flick for guys.

 

I go to the library book sale twice a year. But, there's the Book & Movie Exchange and Half Price Books that you can go to anytime. There's also a shop in St. Matthews, that I can't remember the name of, but it's kind of on the corner of Brekinridge Lane & Nanz Avenue.

I've never been to the library book sale but will definitely have to check it out. I go to Book & Movie Exchange and Half Price Books quite often. From my experience BME is cheaper and closer, but HPB has a much larger selection. I also find a lot of used books online.

I just got "Dreamseller" which is memoir of the life of Brandon Novak who was a heroin addict. He is one of the best friends of Bam Margera so I'm really familiar with him....should be a very interesting read.

That is a GREAT book OR!

I am an English major and am forced to read the most horrendous books from the 1700's, so not much time for pleasure reading anymore; but anything by James Patterson is absolutely amazing. I never really enjoyed Michener..

Just finished " Basilica " by William D. Montalbano . and I am currently reading " Solving Stonehenge " by Anthony Johnson

 

Also just this mornibg finished reading the first chapter of an as yet unpublished book by my brother tentatively titled " Tied to the Land " . I read it and make suggestions on how to improve it . It will be a Text book about the Amish , the Hutterites ,the Snake Handlers , Polygimast cults and The Christian Identity Sect.

A very entertaining but off-the-wall author. After I read Choke, I almost felt like I needed a debriefing.

I loved Choke, probably my favorite of his so far. I missed going to watch the movie, but would love to see it, especially since Fight Club was adapted so well. I am thinking of starting Rant soon, have you read it?

 

If you haven't read it yet, I really recommend Invisible Monsters, it is right there with Choke, I think.

Sounds very interesting. I love religous nonfiction books.

Anyone like Morris West? The Clowns of God was a good one.
