2 teams per district

Featured Replies

I think the system should be changed to allow only the top two per district into the playoffs. I would hate to see a school with a great chance of going far in the playoffs lose a key starter playing a winless team. It would make the district games more important during the season, make the season a little shorter and stop rewarding teams for "existing".

1. Eliminate bye week.

2. Top three (3) teams in each district make playoffs. Therefore you must win at least one (1) game to make playoffs.

3. District winner gets bye week in first round.

This horse has been beat to death on here and there was a thread a couple of weeks ago about winless teams. It's not changing. The powers-that-be like having more teams in. I do like the above suggestion, though.

There was a time when only the top two teams went to the playoffs. But I think that political correctness has taken over.

I agree completely. There should just be two teams advancing in each district. This is especially true now that we've spread the wealth out across (a ridiculous) six classes.

This season, you have teams like winless Glasgow, Clinton County (having won no district games) at 1-9, McCreary Central (needing only to edge a winless team to advance) at 4-6. In this year's playoffs, there are 69 teams with a losing record; and over a dozen of those have won less than two games. Making it so easy to get into the playoffs just diminishes the sense of accomplishment, and gives some teams nothing to strive for.

Dont forget we are also a state that lets ALL basketball teams play in the post season tournament.

Found this from a post I made last year after week one of the playoffs, when the same complaints were being made about four teams from each district getting in the playoffs...

3 #4 seeds won on the road over the #1's last night.

16 #3 seeds won on the road over the #2's last night.

( I don't think these teams think it was a boring week)

27 games were decided by less than 16 point (2 TD's + Conv) last night with many other games being that close late in the second half, before on team pulled away.

It doesn't hurt anything allowing these extra teams in the playoffs. As far as hurting basketball, please.......the last few weeks only the very best football teams are still going by Thanksgiving. After this Friday over half of the schools in the state will not have to worry about football anymore this year, after next week over 75% are done with football. I just don't buy that this is hurting basketball at all.

Even though I have no problem what so ever with the current playoff format, I would have no issues if this was adopted.

BTW....GCHS, got to give you props for position on this, since your proposal would have kept Garrard out this year.

This is why I have commented several times to just go ahead and let the 31 teams that are out of the playoffs, in and have a state tournament. It would only add one round to the playoffs.

Hadn't even thought about that!

Illinois uses a very complex system of determining playoff teams where a team must win 6 regular season games to clinch a playoff spot. They have 8 classes with 32 teams in each class tournament.

"The boys football playoffs are the only IHSA tournament for which teams qualify on the basis of their regular-season records. There are 562 schools playing 11-man varsity football in 2008. However, seven Chicago Public League conferences comprising 45 teams do not participate in the playoffs, leaving a total of 514 eligible schools. Of these, 256 (slightly less than half) will be selected for the playoffs."

In Kentucky it's 192 of roughly 225, about 85%.

Why all of the complaints about football?

I think it's an issue because of time. On all of the above sports with the exception of football, you can have multiple teams compete several times at the same venue in the same day. That's not an option with football. The scheduling alone for the playoffs would be a headache. You'd add at least 2 more weeks to the playoffs which this year would move Championship weekend to 12/26 and 27!

There was a time when only the district champ made the playoffs.
