Belfry 21 Johnson Central 13

Featured Replies

I also have to add that Belfry's linemen are fantastic!!! They are the heart of this team!!!

The tandum of Casey Whetstone and Corey Coleman are deadly...as well as every one of the young MEN who are standing shoulder to shoulder with them, play after play, opening the holes for the backs to get their glory....without them no one gets anywhere.

MY hats off to the linemen...the ones who grind it out in the trenches with very little recognition:fight::ylsuper:

Matney said he didn't see it coming.

"In all of the years I have coached against Belfry I have never seen him run

a fake punt," he said.

This quote in Josh Ball's article sums it up.

Shew..I haven't gotten to post on here in about a year...but here it goes....LOL

First, let me congratulate Coach Haywood and the Belfry Pirates on one of the most exciting games I have seen this year. The boys..let me change that..young MEN on this team NEVER gave up for one minute during this game. They didn't let anything get to them and they kept their emotions in check..a very mature and impressive team!!!

Secondly, Johnson Central was ready and fought tooth and nail with the Pirates...They are a very physical team with a lot of talent and I wish them nothing but the best in the playoffs!!

I know there will be a lot of what if's and if only's for many years to come about this game...the 2 point conversion will be the talk around the breakfast table as to whether that was the dumbest call ever made or whether you would have done the same thing in that position. I'm glad I don't have to discuss something like that since Haywood's call of a fake punt worked...:thumb: (If it hadn't, Belfry fans would have been having the same discussions that I'm sure JC fans are having)

I have to say that Belfry fans were definitely back in the game as the 12th man on the field tonight....I love ballgames that bring out every emotion possible with one turn of events!!

Did Belfry bring a big crowd to this one?

Belfry always brings a big crowd to everygame...heck, half of the time we outnumber the home team's crowd.

I know that the visitor side bleachers were filled to capacity and there were a hundred or more standing around the track.

Didn't realize the state finals were set already. We might want to let it all play out.
Sorry. I should've said "would be" instead of "should be." :thumb:

I saw JC play in 2006 when they played CovCath at JC. What a great place and the people are great too. JC was a lot of fun to watch because they played good ole smash mouth football. Good Luck in the playoffs. It looks like I may get to see you play CovCath in the second round.

3. Same drive, Belfry punches in the TD and hold a 12-7 lead and Phillip Haywood makes his second gutsy call of the game. Belfry goes for two. Belfry runs the option again and this time Ivan Lee is stonewalled at the L.O.S., so Elkins pulls the ball out, makes the DE collapse, and pitches it to Varney. This time the PERFECT read as Varney walks into the endzone untouched. Now JC has to convert after the TD regardless if it is 1 or 2.

Coach changed things up a lot on that play and optioned in a way we hadn't seen before. Very good play call that fooled everyone and left Varney to walk into the end zone.

Nice to see you posting Pirate Pal

Really, you have been missed, along with some others. :thumb:

Yesterday while walking out of Commonwealth there was a kid in front of my (good sized young man) wearing a Belfry Varsity jacket. I said "Go Big Red" and he turned around. He had no idea who I was but I assured him I was from Belfry. He then said "did you go to our game last night?" You could tell he was proud and rightfully so.

Good job again guys!

I'm pretty sure that play was 26 Pitch, but yes, he seldom runs that play.

I'd also be willing to bet the pitch was called in the huddle and not read.

I missed you, too.:D

:thumb: I think you're right on both accounts. It was 26, at least that is what we thought. We had discussed it in the stands that we thought 26 keeper would be open because everyone was crashing down on Ivan and nobody was covering Andrew.

Perfectly timed, in my opinion, and Ivan ran harder on the fake than he did anytime he had the ball that night. It was a well executed play by all.

I was standing in that corner of the endzone. My cousin and I were saying to each other that this would be a perfect time for that call. Needless to say we were slapping each other on the back bragging about picking the play, easily forgetting all the times over the years we'd guessed wrong.:D
