Elliott County's front line is 6'2", 6'1", and 6'1". OUCH!! Well that would be tall in the 1940s!!! Bigger they are the harder they fall or something like that!! Well like I said before, if you were judging by warm-ups and never had saw the Elliott boy's play you would say that other team may cream them.

East Carter being a good example. They are tall and are dunking every which way in warm-ups and Elliott is short and shooting normal layups. But we know how those scores turned out x 4 last year. Those style points in warm-ups don't count during the game!!!

Daniels and Pervis are the 6'8 and 6'7. I stand corrected on the 6'6. I was thinking of Ryan Blair.....I asked him today how tall he was and he told me 6'4...

I think a lot of times a team's size is overrated though. Just because you have a lot of big players doesn't exactly translate in to success. A prime example is Lexcath of last year who had a pretty big front line and guards but lost to a much quicker team in Holmes in the semis and Scott Co who had a pretty big team who didn't even make it out of their region.

 

Elliot Co is a prime example that size doesn't matter on the court.

Tall teams from the past...

 

I remember the PRP team of 1975-6 had a top 8 that went like this:

 

Center 6'7" Tony Raymer

PF 6'6" Charlie Jackson

SF 6'4" Dennis Short

SG 6'4" Mike Slayton

PG 6'3" Michael Cain

 

SUBS:

Center 6'9" Kenney Blakey

Forward 6'7" can't remember his name...

Guard 6'0" (six foot...how'd he get in there?) or his...

 

That wouldn't quite measure up to some of today's teams, but 30 years ago, that was unbelievably huge. That year's Panther team lost the 6th Region final to Shawnee, who had an awesome player named Durand Macklin, who later played at LSU...

Not quite as big as some of the teams mentioned, but Boone County's starting five goes:

 

6'6"

6'5"

6'3"

6'0"

6'0"

 

with gym shoes on! :-)

 

and have a 6'7" sophomore coming up.

 

However, I feel they are still a little undersized in the post. Like any team, it sure would be nice to have another 6'6"+ player like Scott County and some of the other teams! Northern Kentucky teams have not historically had a lot of decent tall players, except for the ocassional 6'8" Justin Doelman, 6'7" Ross Neltner, or 6'8" Mike Brock most recently. I can't remember anyone over 6'8" who was a great player. I know Brossart had a 7'0", and Dixie did not that long ago, but I don't know how dominant they were.

The 7' kid from Dixie was I believe when they had the Bramlage brothers and O'toole. He was pretty much just a big body. Not very coordinated and lacked fundamentals.

 

I'd say the best Big man to come through nky this decade was Mike Brock of Sk and this is coming from a Highlands fan. (Neltner won KY Mr. Basketball his senior year but I was much more impressed with Brock who won the head to head battles betwen him and Neltner and him and Doellman)

And the good thing for GRC is most of these players are Sophomores.

Agreed, I'm a bit of a homer though having been friends with Brock since we were in kindergarden. I still can't believe we didn't make state out senior year in 2003.

 

Went and watched St. Henry play Mason County(who eventually won), and Mason had no answer for St. Henry's big guy in the first half and he was only about 6'5, fortunately for MC he had some sort of injury before half time. After seeing that game I couldn't help but think what if.

Holmes isn't the tallest team in the state but when Riley and D. Johnson aren't in you'll see the following lineup:

 

PG- Housely 6'2

G/F- J. Johnson 6'5

G/F- R. Johnson 6'5

G/F- Pittman 6'6

G/F- Arnold 6'6

 

That lineup will be their toughest to defend since all of those players play more like guards. Teams with bigger big men will get in foul trouble trying to guard Pittman and Arnold outside.

 

They are probably the most athletic group, which makes them even better than their size

No doubt. St Henry beat SK three times that year by a combined 8 points. I still think that's one of the best teams in the 9th to never make it to Rupp. They were loaded that year with Brock, Nevels, and Kannady, all of whom were good enough to play at the next level and had good size.

Had Brock got in to the politics of winning MR. Basketball and actually had someone campaign for him that year like Neltner did, he would have won it. He was the real deal.

Every team (even the top ranked teams) has some weaknesses. Most of the time they play away from those weaknesses. For Elliott it is size and depth. We don't need a lot of big men the way we play, but if we could borrow 6'6" Ricardo Johnson and put him along with 6'7" Timmy Knipp along with the twins and Ferguson that would be great. We will send him back after the state tournament (smile)!!! Nice try anyway!!! Look forward to seeing two teams loaded with talent, size, and athleticism when Holmes takes on Scott County.
