Beechwood had some really nice players on the Freshman team. A couple of their lineman were absolute studs. Yes LN, i watch other positions on the field besides the skilled positions. I know your cracking up right now, but it's true.:thumb:

I would expect last nights crowd will be bigger than tonights Varsity game. Hey, are we sending a bus for Central's band tonight. It is definately a treat to watch Central's band perform.

 

 

Their band is awesome. Was watching last years Highlands / L. Central game and jammed to the band the entire time. :banana:

Congrats to Beechwood on playing a great game. Also a superb coaching job! How about the fake punt on their 1st drive, going for two after HHS made an illegal substitution, lining up for the extra point and faking it for two with a wide open pass (which came back due to a penalty), not kicking deep to HHS after #6 ran back the opening kickoff to the Beechwood 40, 3rd and 19 pass that resulted in not only a completion but a 70 yard score, the long drive after HHS had 12 men on the field etc., etc. Lastly they did a great job of scouting knowing that HHS would run the counter over and over and over.

 

What about awesome fan support. As several of the HHS players sadly said after the game, Beechwood gave themselves home field advantage. They had actual cheerleaders, they had a sign that they ran thru coming onto the field which commended them on a great season, they had student section support with kids painted and cheering, their parents gave them standing ovations over and over.

 

That being said. HHS frosh who read this post, keep your heads up. You guys are awesome! You had several key players in #34, #75, and #83 who were hurt, but you guys played hard and never quit. The talent is there and will be developed by Coach M. next year. Wide receivers and tight ends, keep up the hard work. You will be blended into and utilized in a passing offense next year. Running backs, key backs you did great, but those of you who played little or none at all on O, you will be in there. To the entire team, you had a great season!

This was clearly indicative and certainly made it seem like the Beechies were playing at home. I thought there were a lot of Bird fans there but most parents and family. The student section for Highlands I think consisted of 10 kids or so who sat in one area and didnt utter a cheer once. I thought when the Birds came out after halftime there could have been a little more standing and cheering to pump up the team. All I heard was a smattering of clapping and I was one of them. I dont get it, I guess the Bird fans just expect them to win each and every time and dont feel the need to get excited.

Agreed on most comments above:

 

1 - Bwood players & fans had MUCH more enthusiasm in the 1st half. Not sure how long the Bwood players have sported the mohawks, but that is certainly a sign of team unity.

 

2 - Illegal substitution was key play #1. Bwood got the 2d half kick and was forced to punt. Birds had nice drive to McGurn's TD. 2 pt. conversion made it 22-15. Ensuing KO skips past dangerous #42 and Bwood takes over at their own 5. 4th & 6 with Bwood in punt formation, Birds get penalty. I've never heard of automatic 1st down for illegal substitution, but I am very confident that the 5 yds. wasn't enough for 1st down. For whatever reason, it was a 1st down.

 

3 - Key play #2 was the 71 yd. TD on 3rd & 18 after a Bwood penalty. Same drive (after changing ends for 4th quarter). If the Birds force a punt there, they have momentum and an opportunity to tie the game (or go ahead). Great pass, great catch & great run after catch.

 

 

Bwood made more plays, better plays and capitalized when opportunities were given/created. They deserved to win and did so.

The Varsity Soccer Team played in the STATE Tourney last night as well. But the Fan support was also lacking a couple of years ago when the HHS-Frosh went UNDEFEATED. HHS-Frosh does not have Cheerleaders, go figure.

That picture is when the pass is on its way, obviously while the pass was still completed, a little bit of pass interference. Taking nothing away from Beechwood's victory, but the ref. on the stadium side never flagged anyone, except on True's run at the end of the 1st half.
