Winless teams in the playoffs....

Featured Replies

DADDY CAT,

I disagree with you on this one. Post-season play should be a reward that is EANRED and not simply given because your district is geographically isolated.

Betsy Layne snapped a 31 YEAR STREAK WITHOUT A PLAYOFF GAME by winning their way into the playoffs ina 6 team district. Yet, you have a team like Clinton County who has only had football a couple years and can go to the playoffs even if they gave up 100 points a game. Is it fair that the acomplishment those Betsy Layne players earned is the same thing Clinton County gets?

This whole "everyone gets a trophy" society is what is hurting our country!

Imagine Lynn Camp is 10-0 and has Quinton Henson's clone back at RB and a legit chance at a State Title. You are playing an 0-10 team who has a noseguard with a bad temper. The Noseguard and your Guard are going at it and it starts getting chippy. But with the score 21-0 in the First Quarter the referees are a bit more lax than normal and they let it go. Finally the NG has had enough and out of frustration cheap shots Quinton Henson and injures him after the play. As a result your superstar is done for the playoffs.

Not winning any games during the regular season should make you ineligible for post seasonal play, and the Team that you would face should get a 1st round bye......

You must WIN your way to the playoffs in my opinion. 4 team districts aren't the solution if the top 4 always go to the playoffs. The geography of some of these district are unreal and absurd to begin with.

Welcome to the YMCA.

Did EVERYONE GET THEIR TROPHY?

Well, we go to a 5 team district next year. We'll have teams forced to win at least 1. Is one any better than 0? Not by a lot, but it meets the criteria put forward here. Are they any less frustrated or really that much better? How about 2 wins? That is going on and they have a HOME playoff game. Where do we say this team is good and that team can take it's ball and go home.

The fault of the 0-fer teams is the fault of the KHSAA. Not the 0-fer teams.

As far as the Henson's clone, that same scenario could play out with a 6-4 team, also. I'm sure that the teams are frustrated, but some of it is bound to come out way before the playoffs.

BTW: Any ideas on how to do that cloning thing on Henson? We'd love that around here!!!!:D

I think Ohio has a better way of selecting teams for the playoffs. It ranks teams based on victories, strength of schedule, etc. It's not perfect and there are some early mismatches, but you won't find winless teams making the playoffs based on what (4-team) district they play in. Playoffs, IMO, is a way of rewarding kids for accomplishing something they have earned, not entitled to.

While I don’t think the KHSAA playoff/class system is perfect, I certainly wouldn’t want the Ohio system. Under the Ohio system the reverse argument is true where a lot of good teams don’t get in the playoffs and they use the conference system where teams from different divisions (classes) in the same conference (district). A lot of 8-2 and 7-3 teams in Ohio don’t make the playoffs. I don’t think that would make too many people in Kentucky too happy if that were to happen here.

As of right now there is a possibility that 11 TEAMS with no wins at all could reach the playoffs.Give me the Top 2 teams from each district and shorten the playoffs by a week!

Can we do the same for all the other sports as well? If so, then I am for it.

Anyboby with 7 wins or more is invited. Some districts will not have any representation. So be it. In order to EARN the playoffs, you have to be more than 1 game over 500!(This isn't the NCAAYMCA).

Why couldn't you do the same in other sports? Title XI would ensure that you had to do it for the girls as well.

How about EARNING YOUR REWARDS????

I'm all for at least doing something (i.e., winning a football game or two) to earn your rewards. That was my premise in starting this thread.

The only problem with your logic is the inevitable conclusion. Many schools, their students, and fans pride themselves on scheduling schedules chock-full of powerhouse programs. There's another thread here regarding teams with tough schedules...take a look. Make it "NCAA-like" ("need 6 wins to qualify fora bowl") and you take away the incentive to schedule a lot of those games. The fans and players all lose in that situation.

We need to remember this is high school football; not college/pro, and not YMCA. High school should be somewhere in between. It's about competition, and earning a post-season berth is a good lesson that we can derive from healthy competition.

I think "healthy competition" means no winless teams in the playoffs. You can't even say that you "made" the playoffs - because, in actuality, absolutely nothing was earned. Four team districts are "Socialist Sports".

But nothing is lost by having a lot of teams in the playoffs (i.e., 4 teams advance from each district - but preferably districts with 5 or 6 teams!). A contender may be one of the teams that sneaks in... we all know of teams that peak at the end of the year due to injuries, a new coach, or just plain maturity... I can give you several examples...

And having four teams from each district provides more fun for the fans, and at least one extra game for the teams. And the upsets make it exciting...

If this were the case, you would see many programs "water down" their schedule just to make themselves eligible for the playoffs. CUPCAKE CITY ! :thumb:

I know I would if I coached. Let's just do away with classes and districts, and have one champ every year. If you win 7 games, blind draw for the first round.

You are correct! :thumb:

Then you might as well just have St. X and Trinity play on September 1st and be done with whole thing.

The only thing that is a bigger joke than winless. teams going to the playoffs is a state the size of KY having 6 classes. JMO

I agree, go back to 4 classes or do away with in some cases all 4 teams going to the playoffs. 2 is plenty from each district.

Top two team make the playoffs AND district games are the final 3 games of the season. That way a team that peaks late can still get in.
