Winless teams in the playoffs....

Featured Replies

Then you might as well just have St. X and Trinity play on September 1st and be done with whole thing.

I was kind of hinting at that without actually saying it.

Top two team make the playoffs AND district games are the final 3 games of the season. That way a team that peaks late can still get in.

Good idea...right now too many teams have too many district games early. A bit of a handicap for younger teams...gotta grow up quick!

That said...I still like the larger playoff fields...I just don't like districts where it's a free pass...

Should this thought process pertain to other sports as well? There are several winless baseball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, etc. teams that play in the post season tournaments/playoffs.Whats even worse in those sports is you can lose in the district portion of the postseason and get to keep playing into the regional tourney!

I'd have to say no just for the fact that these sports aren't classed and EVERYONE makes the playoffs. You could understand the mess if they let all the FB teams in postseason.

I know this is High School and not the NCAA. I hate the fact that in order to be bowl eligible, all you have to do is get 1 game over average. WOW! I also know that you do not want everyone scheduling "cupcakes". I do like moving all district games to later in the season. Even in a 4 team district if you said everybody goes unles you did not win any games. Then the Team that would have played the 0-fer gets a bye. Why would this not work for every sport? If you don't win ANY games in your district, then you have eliminated yourself from the post season.

:argue:

Anyboby with 7 wins or more is invited. Some districts will not have any representation. So be it. In order to EARN the playoffs, you have to be more than 1 game over 500!(This isn't the NCAAYMCA).

Why couldn't you do the same in other sports? Title XI would ensure that you had to do it for the girls as well.

How about EARNING YOUR REWARDS????

That's just silly. With some districts only having 4 teams that leaves 5 or 6 out of district games for teams to schedule. How about a situation like a couple of years ago when Somerset, who was in 1A, lost their first 4 games of the season. Those games were all against 3A or 4A schools except for a loss to Danville. The finished up the regular season 6-4 and made it to the State Semis. Yet under your proposal they would have went undefeated in their District and not made the playoffs. They would have been penalized for scheduling larger, quality out of district opponents. That wouldn't be right at all. They EARNED THEIR REWARD by using the out of district games to improve and sweep their district.

Agreed: What about using just district games. If you do not win any, your out. So now all you have to do is win 1 game in your district to be playoff eligible.

Or is there just NO answer?

I know last year in 1-A Clinton Co. was 0-10 regular season went to the playoffs, was 0-11 after their playoff game and their coach George Hatcher was voted district coach of the year. Now, you tell me how that is justified before talking about winless teams not making the playoffs.:ylsuper:

What makes a good coach has nothing to do with the record.

He's not even at Clinton anymore, is he?

Think about Hazard, Jenkins, Pineville, and Harlan. The bottom three teams could have a total record of 5 and 25 in the playoffs. So its as broad as it long cause some districts are not very good period.

No he is not.

I agree with those that are wanting the District winner and Runner Up to make the playoffs. I think the KHSAA has changed this to allow more teams to make the playoffs and to allow more gate money coming through. It really makes the regular season seem like it doesn't matter. If they want to do that figure out some way were you have to win "X" amount of games to qualify for the playoffs. Reward those better teams with a bye week maybe during the first week of the playoffs.

I agree, go back to 4 classes or do away with in some cases all 4 teams going to the playoffs. 2 is plenty from each district.

4 classes is not the problem it is taking 4 teams from each district.

I don't see the problem with it. Last year Monroe Co. went 2-9 and lost in the first round of the playoffs 48-0 against Green Co. IMO that playoff game helped to make this current team (8-1 and ranked #4 in 2A) better as it did with a lot of teams in the state. I really can't see why everyone has a problem with a team getting the opportunity to play as many games as possible, IMO it only makes football in KY better and it's not like it has any effect on the final outcome at Papa Johns...

Besides allowing winless teams to "advance" to the playoffs, one of the other issues I don't like about the smaller districts is that with less district games this year, the last two weeks of the season are essentially spent playing meaningless games (for all districts except any involved in a 3-way tie). Just makes these games seem anti-climatic and leaves coaches open to be second-guessed about whether/how much they should be playing their starters, especially in the last (next week's) game.
