What would/should a head coach do when the team mom is openly bashing the head coach to the players and won't send out positive e-mails-only negative ones, the webcast play by play guy constantly has a negative tone in his webcasts, a parent and former peewee coach takes his assessment of the coaching staff to the AD and constantly spreads uninformed negative propaganda, and a former equipment guy openly bashed the head coach on the sideline of a game??????????

 

Three of the four no longer have kids at the school, but their mission in life is to destroy the head coach due to disliking him from the beginning, holding a grudge against him because his son got beat out at a position in previous years, and the fourth one is mad because he was told he was not welcome in the program because he tried to fire a new head jr. high coach with no authority to so.

Yikes. Either keep quiet, do your job, and let your actions speak for you; or fire back with both barrells, but there is no in between in my book. The last thing you do is try to "talk" to any of these bitter folks.

What level of play are we talking about here, High School?

Some adminstrative support to run of the bad mouthers would be a tremendous help. Administration is either for you or against you they need to step up. It took one of our parents throwing the team water cooler into the road after a game to finally have the adminstration step up and handle it. Good luck.

Either of these options are good advice. Do option A first, with all intnet of doing option B directly after. She'll have a stroke and you will probably have permanent hearing damage from the high toned, piercing shreik that ensues. But you will have been able to have a little fun and then be out of a mess.

While I'm not a coach, at this point I'd not spend a minute trying to convince the naysayers that they are wrong. Its too late for that. Perhaps more could have been done earlier to explain my actions and decisions as a coach. Rather, at this point I'd have a team meeting and I'd tell my players that there are people out there trying to tear me down and that the players need to make up their own minds whether the criticism is valid. I'd explain that I and the other coaches are doing everything to the best of our abilities to make the team as successful as possible. I'd work with the AD, the principal and, if appropriate, the superintendent (talk to the principal about that) to assure them that I am doing the right things and I'd explain the reasoning behind my actions and decisions. I'd be careful not to attack the naysayers when I spoke with the school administration. I'd simply point out that while I appreciate the naysayers concerns and desire that the program be as good as possible, I'd say that the naysayers in my opinion are wrong in their criticisms and then let the administration deal with it.

 

I know this may be hard to accept, but the naysayers are only criticizing the coach because they care. They wouldn't criticize if they didn't care and that would be even worse. I actually have zero problems with parents and supporters expressing their concerns about a program, first with the coach and if that doesn't get their concerns resolved, then with school administration. But its critically important how they express their concerns. I was taught in the Marines that you always dissent from within. Never, ever take the dissent or disagreement public as that tears the whole unit apart. Certainly no fan, in my opinion, should ever criticize a coach or program on message boards like this one (I understand that others disagree with me on that point), or at booster meetings or cocktail parties, etc. There's that old conventional wisdom: never air your dirty linen in public. Parents and boosters should never, ever under any circumstances express their concerns to the players. No team can ever succeed under any circumstances when the players don't believe 100% in their coaching staff. A leader should never be criticized in front of his unit or players. In my opinion, if the disgruntled parents and supporters don't handle the expression of their concerns in the proper manner, they are as much, if not more, a cause of the problem as any coaching deficiencies. Any school administrator with a lick of sense and worth his/her salt should quickly realize that and weigh how the parents and fans have acted heavily as he/she tries to sort out this mess.

 

If you are a coach dealing with this issue yourself, good luck. Trust in the Lord to guide you and your team through this mess. If you lose your job, it may be the best possible thing for you because no coach should have to deal with parents and fans that act in the manner you have described. IMO it would be based on what the record at the school is and what you have done for the program and the kids. There is no way you can please everyone and you are the coach for a reason. All parents and fans get upset occasionally, this is understandable but to constantly belittle and bash the coach is hurting the players and the team probably more than the coach. I am a coach in the flag league and I have VERY selective hearing. Parents always seem to think they can do a better job than the coach. I am as guilty as anyone at Monday morning quarterbacking, I think everyone has some of that in them, but I do not try to hurt the program or the players. Sit back and look at what you have done and see if the complaining is legit, if not then talk to your players and turn on your selective hearing.

Fair enough and good point. But I don't think one can lump all criticisms of coaches or the status of a program as being similar to the one you had to deal with.
