Who said I was talking about Williamsburg? and in my argument I should have included Pikeville because they are normally considered one of the better class A teams in KY. I am talking about Lynn Camp and any of the other smaller school in the area. LCA went to state last year, so playing them is ok because if Corbin loses it's ok, they got beat by a state runner up. Bottom line. Corbin has nothing to gain from playing any of the local smaller schools, because they are expected to win and if they lose.... well why take that chance, it's just not worth it when you may get beat from time to time now because Corbin is no longer guaranteed a victory and it's just too scary a proposition to take a chance on it.

 

The facts are, when the series with Williamsburg, Whitley County, Knox Central and a few other local teams ended in the 70's and 80's it was because the other teams could not compete and refused to play Corbin.

Maybe we could get a Tri-County Bowl going, something like the Pike Co. Bowl format.

Corbin is afraid to get beat by the smaller schools. Its ok to loose against a NKY team, but heaven forbid a local small school beating them. However Corbin will play the small schools in other sports all they want.

 

As I stated in an earlier post, Corbin dropped Williamsburg because the Yellow Jackets were going into a down cycle and it would not have done the Hounds any good to play them. Personally, I would much rather lose to Williamsburg than some other schools...........most of their fans know how to handle winning

I would think that part of the reason Corbin does not schedule the small local teams is because of the geography. IF they lose to a Pikeville, they hear about it for a season. IF they lose to a small local team, they hear about it for a lifetime. It seems to never go away and grows in proportion. The win means a lot more to the small schools than the loss would ever mean to Corbin. But the aftermath for years.....I can see where that would get old, too.

Point taken Daddy Cat. Remember when Lynn Camp beat Corbin in the grid a few years back? Corbin's players caught a harder time for that loss than any in probably 20 years prior to that. However, as quick as some are to mention LC's Grid O Rama win, no one talks about the following year's Pigskin Classic. Its a lose/lose situation, and honestly I'd like to see a few more statewide powers gracing Corbin's schedule in future years.

 

If you want to be the best, you must beat the best, that is right approach.

That's kind of what I was getting at. We won and I knew the game would be brought up over and over, even if you won the next 22 in a row. The same with Williamsburg's win a few years ago. If you beat them the same 22 in a row, the loss never goes away. Now, if you lose to LCA, beat them the next year, you don't hear about it and the loss is only mentioned in passing from time to time, not flung in your face. I can see where it is lose/lose for Corbin to play the local teams, big or small.

But you know that particular year of the Grid, Corbin wasn't the only team to get a taste of LC that year. They were a top 1A team, and I believe they accomplished enough so that no one can call it fluke.

I believe another poster on here said that Williamsburg tried to schedule last year and this year. I don't think Williamsburg has been in a down cycle these past two years. What about LC? LC last year before Joe was hurt was a very good football team. Year and year out LC can compete normally. This year even with all the injuries LC has still done fairly well against good teams. LC's depth has hurt the team in 4th quarter of some games.

LC does not try to schedule Corbin very often. It has been a problem to get the same weeks open for it, so it has kind of went by the wayside. It comes up from time to time. We may have something in the future, but we're looking down the road a ways for it. We could compete with Corbin in our up cycles, but it would hurt us during our young cycles. Williamsburg overachieved last year. They developed faster than many expected, SB. They are where I thought they would be this year. Last year suprised me a little. I did not expect them to be quite the team they were, but I did not expect them to do what they did, either. That is the type of stuff that hurts our scheduling in 1A. The intangibles are hard to decipher. We expected to win maybe 3 total games the 2003 season and went to the state semi finals. No way to forsee being that good with what we had.

You're right Daddy Cat, hard to tell what a little 1A team is gonna have from year to year. Sometimes you think you're gonna be great and a couple of injuries here and there can kill ya. Other times you think there is not much in the cupboard and then wham, the kids get a little bit of passion and confidence and it's like an entirely different team.
