During this 10 year stretch Corbin had in basketball 2 region titles and was region runner up twice.

In 2A football Corbin made the playoffs every year by reaching the first round once, the second round twice, the third round three times, the fourth round twice and was the state runner up once.

Sorry, I was just sticking to the premise of the thread. If we want to talk how good or bad Highlands has been we can do it elsewhere:thumb:

Sort of an aberation. These types athletes don't come down the pike very often. Highlands has had successful teams that did not have many, if any football players playing. Hard to do at a school that size though. They really need the athletes to come out for bball also.

 

If my understanding is correct, aren't Collinsworth and Roller coming out for the hoops team this year? Those two are pretty dang good athletes. I wonder if they will also play baseball this Spring. They are darn fine baseball players also.

Collinsworth and Roller are indeed both coming out this year. If I'm not mistaken both attended some summer games with the Birds.

Well you asked. I'll put 82 out there also. Birds were led by Terry, Simons, and Schlarman. Yeah I know Jeff Kremer was also huge in them winning the 9th that year. I guess my point is that besides the Lorenzen/Smith era, Highland teams were mainly led by bball guys with the football athletes as contributors. Where I am weak here is late 80's early 90's, so I guess I could be wrong there.

 

Late 70's. 79 team beat a highly touted Dicky Beal led Holmes team at Holmes to take 9th region title. Beat Louisville Westport in 1st round at Sweet 16, then lost to Christian County. This team is regarded as one of Shields best at Highlands. No footballers:thumb:

If you look at Highlands most successful years recently though it was when they had multiple football players on the team as well. The 97-01 teams were led by football kids. Almost every year that Highlands has been a regional contender this decade, it's been with football players contributing. Having those guys on the team really allows more options and the ability to play more physical defensively because of the depth that they bring.

 

I'll still stick by my opinion that had Stein been healthy all year long as well as Simpson, Highlands is playing in the region championship last year against Holmes and it wouldn't have surprised me to see them knock them off.

Contender every year? Last 5 seasons 71-72 with one regional final appearance. Is what it is.

I meant the years that they were contenders in the past 5 seasons they had a few football players on the team. I agree they have been very up and down for some reason over the past few years. Losing record one year, but region contender the next with practically the same team. (05/06...07/08)

Covington Catholic has garnered a lot of criticism in the past due to their "lack of success" in the regional tournament. CCH had 1 regional title in the 90's ('92), so I'm not sure they're the best comparison.

 

When did Holmes play in the same district as NCC? Hasn't it been Holmes, Cov Cath & Holy Cross for most of the 90's (and still today)?

Not sure when but I think it may have been when they were in the 34th and that consisted of Dixie, Holmes, NCC, and I'd like to say Lloyd but I could be wrong.

Other than the Neltner & Gilles years (2002 & 2003), when haven't they relied on football players? Even then they relied heavily on football players...Neltner & Gilles just carried the majority of the load.

 

I can really only speak for SK when I was there as far as b-ball is concerned, but during that time period the key guys on the b-ball team were definitely not football players also. There were some fb players that maybe could've helped on the hardwood, but I definitely think some of the b-ball players could've helped out on the gridiron. Mostly on offense.

Here's a question...when's the last time a school won a basketball and football state championship in the same year, if ever? Or made the state championship in both?
