Does anyone know how many of Russell's basketball players played football on the state title team?

I think a lot will notice that the most successful programs in the state, basketball wise, right now and recently are ones who have maybe 1 or 2, if any kids that play both.

 

I think this year is the first year in a very long while that Holmes has no football players apart of their basketball team and no basketball players apart of the football team.

 

At a school like Highlands though, to the contrary, their most successful years, late 90's/early 2000's, were when they had the football boys coming out playing every year. (Lorenzen, Guidugli, Smith to name a few)

Sort of an aberation. These types athletes don't come down the pike very often. Highlands has had successful teams that did not have many, if any football players playing. Hard to do at a school that size though. They really need the athletes to come out for bball also.

Take last year for example. I honestly think had Stein been apart of the team they were the team to beat and would have probably beaten Holmes. Now that's a moot point because we'll never know but just using it as an example.

 

If we're talkin about years where Highlands was a serious contender not only in nky but also at the statewide level though, it's years where they had several football players on the team as well.

No, CovCath has 3 since 90 and NCC has 1. My point is that NewCath's basketball success has been underscored. For most of '90s NewCath played in the same basketball district as Holmes. They drew Holmes at least 3 times in the first round during that period. That has much to do w/ the lack of regional success.

 

Covington Catholic has garnered a lot of criticism in the past due to their "lack of success" in the regional tournament. CCH had 1 regional title in the 90's ('92), so I'm not sure they're the best comparison.

Other than the Neltner & Gilles years (2002 & 2003), when haven't they relied on football players? Even then they relied heavily on football players...Neltner & Gilles just carried the majority of the load.

Maybe this is an incorrect assumption, but I would think that the small-to-medium size schools that do well in FB would also do well in BB in those same years due to a number of athletes playing both sports.

 

Mason County's best years in football coincide with excellent years in basketball as well. The 02 and 03 football teams, for example, had Dustin Grutza and Chris Lofton at QB and WR; and they had a pretty fair couple of years in the Sweet 16 to go along with the football success. I'm guessing that the largest schools don't always rely as much on multi-sport athletes.

Well you asked. I'll put 82 out there also. Birds were led by Terry, Simons, and Schlarman. Yeah I know Jeff Kremer was also huge in them winning the 9th that year. I guess my point is that besides the Lorenzen/Smith era, Highland teams were mainly led by bball guys with the football athletes as contributors. Where I am weak here is late 80's early 90's, so I guess I could be wrong there.
