Correct about the Sex Pistols not being great musicians. But the was the point of punk. I do not believe they ever played a song the same way twice because they could not read music and they did not take the time to memorize their songs.

And G'n'R -- or, more specifically Axl -- tried to pass the band off first as hair metal, then as punk, then as transcendent above any genre. And that's what makes him ridiculous. Fortunately, I was able to spot his ridiculousness way back when G'n'R actually was quasi-relevant. Only now, with the benefit of hindsight and the decade-plus odyssey of this silly album does everyone else finally realize what I always knew.

I never understood the fascination that people had with this band. I was alive in their "heyday" and I don't really think that they did anything impressive. I enjoyed a few songs, at the most, but nothing to make me actually want spend my money on anything they've ever produced or will produce in the future, whether free Dr. Pepper is involved or not.

I do not recall them trying to be a hair band. When they came to Bogarts, in Cincionnati, before "Welcome to the Jungle" came out and made it big they were anything but a hair band. They were actually scary to see in concert in those small venues very rough crowd and I saw many concerts there.At their concert was the first time I started to see piercings in spots other than the ear.Trust me it was not a hair band crowd there to see them.

You need to go check out the video for "Sweet Child Of Mine" again. Axl looks positively girly with the clothing, makeup and tousled hair that would've made the guys from Poison envious. They changed the look soon after it became obvious the hair metal fad was dying, but that is indeed what they looked like initially.

That is not what they looked like! Did you see them in concert before any videos came out? Did you see the live concert filmed at CBGB's that they would play after "Head Bangers Ball" on Saturday nights before they had videos on MTV?

 

Wrong video! Sweet Child of Mine he is wearing a bandanna and his hair is not teased. His hair was teased for the "Jungle" video. It was and is the only time it was like that. The reason it was done like that for the video was at the strong urging of the record label.

 

Poison reference is interesting because Slash was a member of that band briefly, he left right after they decided to put on make-up. Then enter C.C. Deville to take his place.

I have the CD and I think that it's very good. There are a couple of different musical styles within. It's up to date and a very good listen.

 

Axl is a different breed. He can be obnoxious, aggorant, and a pompous ..., but his musical genius is far apart from other metal/hard rock bands. The lyrics are well written. Some like him some don't, and some loathe him. Still, I enjoy "Chinese Democracy" better than anything out right now.
