I think they will have a good season this year and next. They have some pretty good talent.

 

You can keep telling yourself that but you know as well as I do that Boone will not play well down the stretch. The coach doesn't know how to prepare them to do so and the players know that. The players don't believe in the staff and the system that they are put into. Until there is a change at the top they will continue to be pretenders.

I think the biggest problem is a lot of times schools don't give a coach enough time to develop the talent they're given. If they don't win within the first 2-3 years, they're automatically considered a bad coach who can't win.

 

It all starts with the younger kids in the system because those are going to be the ones who have more time to develop within a system.

 

I don't see the middle school coaches necessarily always conferring with the high school coaches and running their systems at all schools. How many years at a school is a good amount of time? 4 or 5 enough?

I was talking about Ryle. I still have hope but no expectations for Boone.

He had ample talent last year!! He really didn't have a bad Senior class. There seemed to be positions filled by the wrong player. Some players were kept on the floor despite their unwillingness to play as a team and pass the ball instead of taking ridiculous shots. Any team that played them last year would tell you there were two players in particular who wanted a one man show. The two games I was at, it seemed as though his ear was being "bended" by too many parents. He left in one of his guards who I'm not sure if he was having a bad game....but he got his pocket picked 4 straight times down the court and was equally ineffective defensively. TAKE HIM OUT. I didn't see that kid the next time we played, so I don't know if he was an issue or not. Maybe it would benefit coach Highfield to make those kind of calls despite the disapproval of the parents. If I remember correctly his dad was a coach sometime ago for Ludlow. He was decent. I'm sure coach Highfield seeks his advice. How many years has he been coaching? It takes a couple of seasons to develop a coaching style and to adapt to the talent pool you are working with.

I'd say Mullins at Ryle may feel some heat if the wins don't come this year.

 

Steve Helmer and Co. should help him there. Although I haven't seen him play since he was in 8th grade you can't lose what he had.

I'd say that Pendleton Co. needs to win some games this year. Since their good run a few years ago, they've kind of been a pushover.

The games that I attended the players seemed to really leave it all on the court every game for Coach Simms and his staff. Now, I don't know what the future brings but everything I've heard points towards a bright future for PC basketball.

PC is loaded in the 8th grade. They have size and potential D1 player in the future. I don't think anyone in the district and region will be able to contend with them when they're Jr's and Sr's. If they develop, it'll be a cakewalk through the 38th district. Everyone needs to be patient and Simms will have them ready in about 2-3 years!

Ludlow parents are really hard on coaches. They ALWAYS know what the better play would've been the sad part is heck I can say you should've defended that kid different after he just dropped 30 ya know? I do agree that he lets it affect his coaching. The best thing he can do is what former head coach Joe Beard did and actually still does as principal. Let them talk, yell, and boo. Do whats best and just don't give a darn. (I'm sure Beard would've used another word) They'll get over it or the parents will take their kids and go which gets the problem out of your hair. Trust me you pull a couple kids or sit 'em a game or two and they WILL respond.

Coach Simms should not even be on this list. He will be in his 3rd year and took over after PC's Glory years. He is definitely not on the hot seat. He put together a remarkable run at the end of the season last year with a District title overcoming much adversity. He and his staff have done more for the youth in that county than any previous staffs.

I believe he and his teams will be fine. I don't know about the comments of the 8th grade class there being loaded and running through the district and regionals. I believe Harrison County has a fine 8th grade team also and has some height. I do believe they will be very competitive under his watch. It will be ultimately up to the players as how good they will be in the future.

Parents at all schools always have a tendency to over-estimate the abilities of their kids. It has gotten worse IMO over the past 10-15 years. Parents definitely need to be more realistic. With that said a person who decides to become a coach needs to realize that this comes with the job. Coaches not only need to earn the respect of their players but also must be good communicators who not only have the ability to teach the Xs and Os but also be able to explain to parents what is expected from his/her child but also what the parent/player can expect from the coach. It's definitely a 2 way street that both sides need to work on a great deal.

Practice starts today and there are already coaches on the hot seat... sad.
