crush since you truly see things the way they are. How competitive would Ludlow, Bellevue and Dayton be with you if no out of district players could play. You find it easy to criticize from the pedestal you've put yourself on.

I hope your not insinuating that your Tigers are on a pedestool (sp?).. The Bellevue Tigers give you a run for your money every few years, and on top of that beat you every now and then too... Now I'm not trying to get any arguement started, but both teams deserve approval by all schools IMO. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Bellevue was the like 3rd or 4th smallest football playing school about two years ago...

Great post :thumb: There is a lot of pride in the small river schools like Bellevue and Dayton as well as Ludlow. They simply dont have the numbers and it was evident watching the other night. Each team has 4 or 5 kids that could probably start at other programs because they are exceptional athletes but the rest of those kids are just hard nosed, hard working kids who are representing their team very well. They have Tiger/Devil/Panther pride and you cant take that away from them.

 

I was discussing with my friend the other night the "what if" factor of Bellevue and DAyton combining schools and I gotta tell you they would have a very, very good team. It will never happen but if they did you can bet they would beat some very good teams.

It seems to me now that everyone that has commented on Bellevue and Dayton merging thinks that it would be good for them. But a lot of people also think that something like that is way far off... Why? Is it all tradition?

Shoot now after seeing some of these comments by Crush. Even though Ludlow is not as close, I would like for them to combine with Bellevue and Dayton too and then play Beechwood. I mean things would be even then, we would have about the same number of football players, and with guys from different places on the team just like them. I wonder if people from Beechwood would be as cocky about things then, since things would be more on an even level...

I just wanted to chime back in and say that I thought the QB from Dayton has a lot of upside and does a lot of things very well. He has good feet and sees the field very well. Dayton is just lacking bodies but they played their tails off until the final horn. That Richardson kid looks like a college sized player out there as well.

 

Like I said earlier, they may have played like the best 0-5 team in the state the other night.

While I agree that the merger is inevitable the powers that be will hold off as long as possible. Big part is tradition. If you have ever been to a Bellevue / Dayton game you would know what I mean. There was close to a sell out crowd at the game Friday night. Enthusiasm was high on both sides ICN 6 was there to air the game. At this point you can throw all records out the window in this rivalry game. Although I don't think the born in dislike for the other team is as bad as it use to be. As I was watching the game the other night I actually saw kids from the opposing teams congratulating each other on good plays. This went both ways. I think the merger of the two schools is more of a possibility now than it was 20 or even 10 years ago. I know for a fact that Richardson # 21 from Dayton and Buckler # 23 from Bellevue played on the same Division 1 City Knothole Baseball Championship Team together. Just think what a small school system could do with the money saved from not having the duplicate administrations.

I also think this is correct. Although the dislike is still there, I think it is more of a dislike from the athletics stand point. It used to be each city just didn't like the people from the other, but now it seems to be growing into just an athletic thing. Don't get me wrong, the rivarly is still as mean as it was before, but now there is more respect for each team out there. As for the merger, I think it will happen within the next 10 to 15 years. With budgets being cut every year, I think the state will make them and the powers that be will have no choice. Then we will play with Beechwood every year and not just every once in awhile.:flame:

If Dayton and Bellevue merged, wouldn't that put them at about the same average 2 year enrollment as Newport?

 

Dayton enrollment = 295

Bellevue enrollment = 266

----

Total = 571

Newport = 576

 

The combined school would be 2A.

Trust me it would not be missed too much especially if Dayview or Bayton would be in the state games every year.. :fire:

Winning is important, yes. And winning a state title every now and then would be glorious. Agreed with that too. But there's something about this game. It's what small-town USA is all about. A battle between two schools where the "will and hunger" is poured onto the field to defeat the rivaled opponent. If the two schools merged, they might be good for a while, but all tradition, all the legacy, the feel of a Friday night game against your most hated opponent, everything would be gone.
