You have got to understand the reverence with which Highlands fans treat their cannon , which by the way is about 20 times larger than Milfords . The thread was started with tongue in cheek . No disrespect was intended toward the gentleman who purchased the cannon in question .

I didn't even read the article. I am out of town for work and you can imagine with all of my pride for HHS and Fort Thomas when I am sitting in the airport terminal at 5:45 this morning and I see this huge picture of a tiny cannon that is the size of a gym shoe how upset I was. I am sure it was a great article; however, I would have a hard time keeping a straight face posing for a picture with this tiny "cannon." If anyone wants to see a cannon, they know to come to David Cecil Memorial Stadium and look up to the "Birds Nest." There were 2 exceptions to my knowledge when it traveled: They took it to Ashland when we played them in '92 but it was never fired and were threatened with prosecution if it were set off, and anyone who is anyone remembers that disloyal Cov Cath neighbor who allowed the cannon to be set up in their back yard which was fantastic!

 

 

The Ft. Thomas cannon has been fired in Ashland before. I'm not sure what year it was, but I remember it making the Ashland cannon look and sound like a toy.

I thought it was a nice article. However, I just can't understand how a family could get so wrapped up in something so trivial as a cannon at a football game.:confused:

Ok, here is the story of how the Highlands Cannon came to be.

 

 

Long ago in a far away land, ok just kidding, back in the late 60's a crazed Highlands fan had been to a high school game where they shot off fireworks. He liked this idea and so he approached the Ft. Thomas fire marshal and told him they wanted to shoot off blue and white fireworks in Death Valley when Highlands scored. The fire marshal said no way. Well, this crazed Highlands fan doesn't take no for an answer so he kept after the fire marshal until he really became a pain in the you know what. Well, one day this fan thought he would try a different approach. So he met with the fire marshal and asked if we could fire a cannon off. The fire marshall was soo glad he didn't mention fireworks that he said OK. The next week this fan left on his travels to locate a cannon. He arrive back in the Fort on a Thursday night, painted the cannon blue and white, and fired it for the first time on Friday against Cov. Cath. in 1968. When the cannon went off for the first time, the fire marshall was shocked at the size of the cannon and how loud it was. But hey, he said we could have it.

Where is the outrage from the Highlands Fans ? I just finished reading an article is this morning's Enquirer about Milfords pop gun . That is a toy compared to the one the Birds have . Lets hope that next weeks story about Highlands Football has something about their Cannon and it's traditions . It took a Diehard NCC fan to point this out.
