And BF, you are mistaken to as the address for the Cardinal is Union Station. Seems that Amtrak makes a stop at Union Station. That is a pretty cool trick they are pulling off if Amtrack stops at Union Station and they don't have any railroad tracks.

LBBC, apparently you haven't been to Cincinnati in a while. :lol: The Union Terminal used to have many, MANY tracks, and a huge train yard. These have all but disappeared. There may be an active AMTRAK (such as it is) line through there; but as I said, what once was there is no more.

Actually, the Amtrak station is on Dalton Ave.

I understand that it is nowhere near where it once was. Just wanted to point out that it seems at least one train still goes through there and there is at least one set of tracks where when Biden started in Congress there were probably multiple train tracks.:flame: :lol: (Clyde tells me to appreciate zingers no matter who they are aimed at.)

I'm beginning to think Joe Biden and Jim Bunning are long lost brothers.

I was watching a show last night and they were pointing out all the gaffes Biden has already made...they showed like 10 or 12...then they said the mainstream media hasnt covered many of them at all. I guess there still too busy trying to "uncover" Palin!!

Or, maybe he was speaking symbolically toward the regrettable fact that a person can't book a passenger train anywhere in Cincinnati for long-distance travel (or, around town, either)?

Seriously, I think rail travel is an important issue that should be addressed and expanded. Especially considering the energy situation.

To be fair to Biden, what he said would not be out of line with a campaign plank to boost intercity passenger rail service. Rail travel is more fuel efficient on a per passenger basis than highway or air travel, so the idea is completely consistent with a strategy to reduce national oil consumption. Europe's passenger rail system puts ours to shame, and high speed rail is a very viable alternative to commercial airlines for trips of medium distance.

Well, safe except for another thing that I will not mention outright because this is a thread about trains and not about the other thing.

 

The last time I took the train westward, a man and woman moved to Cincinnati on it. And when I say moved, I mean they had an enormous pile of suitcases, bags and boxes, etc. So many, that the attendants were grumbling and they had to be stowed all over the train. But if you think about it, for the fare it was a lot less expensive than renting a moving truck. That is, if you don't mind moving in the middle of the night and unloading all your worldly posessions onto Dalton.

 

I do believe train travel and transport, as well as mass transit in general is an important topic that needs to be addressed. I hope this speech wasn't just more election year pandering.

I agree. Imagine how nice it would be to be able to take a high speed train to Louisville, Lexington, Cincinnati, Dayton, and Columbus. Not to mention the economic benefit it would bring to those areas.
