gold sunrise Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 What does Covington Catholic need to do to improve in 2008/2009? What do they need to keep doing to be successful? Remember, please be constructive.
cch5432 Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Avoid sickness. Matty Klein's unfortunate situation, as well as Mitch Shover (who had/is having surgery this week and has lost ~10-15 pounds) has put this team in a rough situation to start. They also need to develop some type of post scoring for this year. Isler and Counts are physical and can rebound, but shorter and not as polished as Wellbrock and Thelen, who are big and good scorers, but inexperienced, and who knows if they crack the lineup.

Trevor Wellbrock has potential. However, he's going to need to get more aggressvie and more involved. I noticed what seemed to be a passive nature at the JV level. If he can get that fire in his belly he will be a force inside. I'd look for Ice to have a solid year. I've never noticed a lot of post moves but what I did notice is a propensity to use his size and strength to get offensive rebounds. His aggressiveness bodes well for him and hopefully it will rub off on Trevor.

BaseballIsLife Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 CovCath is also hurt even more with Luke Maile leaving the basketball team and focusing on baseball (as he should). I'm not familiar with all the players within the organization but is there anybody who could possibly, fill his shoes or at least get close to his production?

I'm not sure what Luke's stats ended up being last year but I'd think that it won't be done by one player but more of a case of being done collectively within the system. It will be a challenge without question.
Qryche11 Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 Whats up with Shover? That is a huge blow. He is a dynamite guard who can bury the 3 ball. Losing Maile and not having a ton coming back will make Coach L gain a few more gray hairs but by midseason I bet they form a competetive team.

Illness/gall bladder problems. He will be ready for the start of the season.

I don't know an awful lot about this team yet, but your post leads me to think positive things. Listerman's style is the most effective when he can go to the bench. I have a hard time believing that there's not enough talent in the system.

I mean that in regards to the ability for a kid to get his own shot. No Jacobs, no Bovard, no Nesto, etc. That's why I said this offense will need to function as a unit (which is not easy at the high school level).
budman0209 Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 I think that the biggest problem they will have this year is at the point guard position. Mitch Shover is their best point guard but also their best scorer. How this team responds when Mitch is taken away will be interesting. I know that last year when Bondick went down teams decided to double Mitch more often and the team struggled. Who will be the second option and be able to step up and take pressure off of Mitch?

ukfan14 Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Alex Ives played in spots last season for CCH and IMO he should have a big impact on the Colonels season.
Nicknack1056 Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 That's a big issue. No question. I don't know the answer. I personally think Covcath will have decent talent, but not enough to compete for a regional title this year. They will be very unexperienced with the exception of Shover. I just dont think they will be able to compete with Holmes, Boone, and Highlands. But they are strong and well coached every year so they will be as good as the talent can take them.
polarbear1994 Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Good opening game with Mason Co. on Dec 5... and even if you guys would go winless this year ( not a predictin, just saying...) STILL the best fans in the state!
