I am having problems understanding the new cross-bracket playoff system. I have read several old posts and have looked at the KHSAA site, but when I click on links to the playoff format, it tells me they no longer exist or are broken.

anyway, someone please help me understand this years playoff format? I know that we are no longer playing teams from our own district in the 1st two rounds this year and will be cross-bracketing from round 1.

So does that mean we will not have a so-called district champion this year?

I know that Russell is in 3A Region 1 district 7. So who will they cross-braket with this year in the 1st 2 rounds?

If they are the top seed does that still give them the 1st two rounds at home?

I guess I could go on, so I'll just make it easy. If someone could please layout the format for me I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks so much in advance

For 1A-5A it's right back where it used to be. So if your team is in 3A District 7, you'll be playing 3A District 8, just like you did before they messed with everything. The only class that is affected in a different way is 6A.

It's much, much, much better the way it is. We have regular season district champions again. We also have true regions again and fans will eventually learn again which district their district plays. It's a terrible marketing strategy to confuse your fans, which last year's system did.

Russell is in District 3-7 Region 4.

District 3-7 will meet District 3-8 in the first two rounds. The higher seed will be home, if like ranked teams meet the even number district will host. Seed 1 will play seed 4, seed 2 will play seed 3 in the first round, then the winners will play for Round 2. In round three the two teams left will play for the regional championship. Region 1 will then play Region 2, Region 3 will then play Region 4 for the semi-finals, with both winners going to the State Championship game.

Ram is right on target.

For discussion, lets say the two districts (7 & 8) finish like this:

D7: 1-Russell, 2-Mason, 3-West Carter, 4-East Carter

D8: 1-Belfry, 2-Sheldon Clark, 3-Pike Central, 4-Magoffin Co

Then the playoffs would look like this

Round 1

4 Magoffin Co @ 1 Russell

3 West Carter @ 2 Sheldon Clark

3 Pike Central @ 2 Mason Co

4 East Carter @ 1 Belfry

Round 2 (Assuming higher seeds win)

2 Sheldon Clark @ 1 Russell

2 Mason Co @ 1 Belfry

Round 3 (Assuming higher seeds win)

Russell @ Belfry

Okay, I think I get it. But I wish they would stop messing with the playoff formats and class systems. If Russell and Belfry happen to both make it to round 4 it would be the 4th time in 5 years that Belfry gets to host that 4th round game.

2004 Russell at Belfry (mud bowl - last game at old Viperman)

2005 Belfry at Russell

2006 Russell at Belfry

2007 Breathitt at Belfry

2008 at Belfry

Belfry and Russell would meet in Round 3 this year.

You are right that it doesn't quite seem fair that Belfry shuld host 4 of the last 5.

And I don't recall Vipperman being muddy in 2004?!?!?!

I thought that Belfry's district would have to play Breathitt's district this year in round 4, but according to the KHSAA region 1 plays 2 and region 3 plays 4, however, both Breathitt's and Belfry's region is listed as 1st region.

Is there a link showing the current format?

You are right, 3W. Belfry's and Russell's region winner (Region 4) will play Breathitt's and Somerset's region winner (Region 3) in round 4.

Current alignment for 2008 ( http://www.khsaa.org/football/alignment.pdf )

Belfry is in D8, Russell is in D7, Breathitt and Harlan Co are in D6, Somerset is in D5.

CLASS 3A

District-3-1- McLean County, Muhlenberg South, Paducah Tilghman, Union County, Webster County

District-3-2- Adair County, Butler County, Edmonson County, Hart County, Russellville

District-3-3- Central, Elizabethtown, Moore, Shawnee

District-3-4- Henry County, North Oldham, Spencer County, Western Hills

District-3-5- Casey County, Garrard County, Jackson County, Somerset, Taylor County, Wayne County

District-3-6- Breathitt County, Cawood, Estill County, Fleming County, Powell County

District-3-7- East Carter, Lewis County, Mason County, Russell, West Carter

District-3-8- Belfry, East Ridge, Magoffin County, Pike County Central, Sheldon Clark

And according to the

http://www.khsaa.org/football/playoffpairings.pdf, the first three rounds of cross-bracketed playoffs are as follows:

In Region 3, D5 plays D6

In Region 4, D7 plays D8

Region ---2008

3A-R1 ----D1 vs. D2

3A-R2 ----D3 vs. D4

3A-R3 ----D5 vs. D6

3A-R4 ----D7 vs. D8

Thanks Watusi, that is what I thought but when I saw the KHSAA had everyone in Region 1 I questioned myself. They need to fix that.

Thank you 3W. That was what I was seeing too. It was really very confusing, which is what prompted me starting this thread in the first place. Thank goodness we got posters like Ram and Watusi to keep it straight
