Indeed. I don't know HOW many Manual games I could say that about. But I learned long ago not to bother. That's why I always find it funny, especially with you-know-who's comment after a certain game. Shoulda/coulda/woulda's are like the force. They surround us, bind us, and, er... the last part makes me uncomfortable to type, but you know what I mean.

Doug Beaumont is certainly a quality player and quality person, Male was good in 2006, but certianly not the best in the state...... they squeeked by a few teams that year too , which is what good teams do.

Male had two close games that season ... a 28-27 win over St. Xavier for the district title and the 38-34 playoff loss to Trinity. Every other game that season was decided, all Male wins, by 26 or more points.

Male is competitive with St. Xavier and/or Trinity in some years, but not always. That is why I say there isn't such a thing as the "Big 3" ... it's actually the "Big 2" and Male occasionally crashes the party.

Whats the big deal? Male got beat by a better team with two SEC recruits and players with a State Championship in their past. Some times you have to give the other team some credit.

Not being familiar with Male's enrollment policy, I wonder if its likely or possible that Cobble and some of the other studs on Central's team could have ended up on Male's squad if they had not decided to attend Central? And given Central's only recent success in football, maybe that issue that could affect Male more down the road than it has currently. Your thoughts please.

I have to go, but I will give a full answer later.

As I understand it Male's enrollment policy has become stricter in only allowing students from traditional feeder schools into there program. It still means that they can take students from every corner of the county but it means that the students need to attend the right middle school first. Male is one the best schools in Jefferson Co. and many well meaning parents want to insure there kids go it, unfortunately for the football team some of the great talent in the county doesn't want to take that route.

 

While Central's success clearly can have a damper in the success of Male, I don't think that the repercussion of Central's success last season would already come to light. Any kid that choose Central over Male due to football program would only be a freshman this season. I actually think that Manual's success over the last few years has had a bigger effect in getting the better role players (i.e. linemen and defense) that once filled up Male's roster. When Male was really rolling Manual wasn't as strong a football school even though they were academically more distinguished, now that Manual has proven to put a good product on the field many of the kids that used to go to Male to get both a good education and a play for a good football team are now making Manual an option, especially without having to go the traditional program route.

 

With all that said Male is still a very good team and they shouldn't be viewed as out of the race. Central may have beaten them but the game has no bearing on Male and was a much bigger deal for Central than Male in the first place. Also Central is a very strong team, capable of giving a fight to anybody in the state.

Not sure that Central's success will ever effect Male because those students are in the traditional program and the reason that a majority of those kids parents put them in the traditional program is so that they can go to Male. Those kids that can get into Manual choose Manual for the academics. Central doesn't have a feeder school and gets whats left from those 2 schools sort to say. In a lot of ways that is still not anything to look down your nose at because they do a heck of a lot with what they have. The entire Culture of Central football has changed under the direction of Ty Scroggins. Maybe in a few years we will be talking about parents choosing Central over Male and Manual. Can anyone say DYNASTY.

In a weird way that isn't exactly the case. Until the recent Supreme Court decision on school assignments racial quotas were keeping many African American kids out of Central. Manual and Male were actually more likely to get African American students that Central (who is an African American majority school) couldn't take in order to make the quotas. Now that the ruling has outlawed the practice it will be interesting to see the result.
