Iraq Veteran's Message to Obama

Featured Replies

Come on JS! This statement is very unJSish. There are MANY reasons people join the military.. unsure of future, service to country, college $, career potential etc, etc. I have a feeling "bloodthirsty" is very low on the list, even as a "general rule" as you say. Your statement is a bit of a slap in the face to our men and women in the military imo.

:thumb: Agree 100%. To say the majority of those in the military are bloodthirsty is very disrespectful. I know 4 or 5 people that have joined the military and all of them are for reasons you mentioned.

Then I read too much into your posts.

Why should it have impact?

Because they actually take the risk.

I don't have stats. However, I speak with very solid confidence that there is a 4-1 margin in votes by military personnel for Republicans. Maybe some fine link artists like cch5432 or Habib can find supporting documentation.

You totally avoided my questions, but I will answer yours first. When 3/4 of a military unit holds to a position, I side with the majority on what the general consensus is.

I found a little.

This is an article from '04.

If you're getting that out of it, you're reading way too much into it.

Think about where the majority of enlistees come from. As a general rule, they come from states where a significant portion of the population hunts. We'd be naive to think there wouldn't be more than a handful of people among that portion who would think it right sportin' to go on the ultimate hunt. I've met a number of my brother's buddies who fit the description.

So you're saying people in the military are nothing more than hillbillies that like to go out and kill things....Nice :rolleyes:

Don't know Jim, still sounds like a bit of a stretch to me.

Yeah, that's what I said. :rolleyes: Don't put words in my mouth.

But when 75% of the soldiers are telling you that Obama's message is offensive, does that not speak to you?

Amen!

But when 75% of the soldiers are telling you that Obama's message is offensive, does that not speak to you? If so, what does it say? They're brainwashed? They don't know what's good for them? They just don't understand? Or is it that you just don't care?

This is certainly a stat that you cannot in any way verify, even if 75% of the military vote for McCain. You have proof that one young man feels this way. Just because someone does not vote for Obama does not mean that this is why or that they feel this way. Likewise, just because someone votes for Obama, that doesn't mean that he/she agrees that we shouldn't have went to war in Iraq.

This statement goes too far and presumes too much.

My stepson is in the Army as most of you know, and yes for the most part they are brainwashed. That's what basic training is all about, break you completely down and then form you into what the military wants. As much as you guys want to drag JS over the coals alot of our military are thrill seekers and adreline junkies.

This qualifies as the worst, most offensive, most inaccurate thing I've ever read on this site. Good gracious. I'm actually glad that someone with such a belief does not support the same man I do for President and is a member of a different political party.

I believe you should withdraw your statement and apologize to our military personal. My son was in the Marines for 8 years and was by no means "bloodthirsty". He was not an avid hunter, he did go a couple of times. What you are doing is no better than a rascist stereotyping minorities.

What they do in basic training is to get you to work as a unit to improve the chances that you survive combat. The brainwashing as you call is getting you to work together as a unit.

This thread is getting extremely interesting.

We have one questioning whether the military personnel's opinions should have any impact;

We have another who believes they hold the opinions they do because as a group they may tend to be more bloodthirsty;

We have another who says they are brainwashed to think the way they do;

We have another who questions the basic premise by saying I only have one soldier's opinion, and that my presumptions are way too overbroad.

I am beginning to understand WHY many soldiers feel ignored.
