Mark Kotsay will be a free agent after the season is over...He will not be a Type A Free Agent, nor will he be eligible to be considered a type B free agent, so therefore he would have just walked. The Braves traded and got a player. They had no intentions of re-signing him for next season anyway. This wasn't a slash in payroll because they are talking about increasing payroll in order to sign a slugging LF (Pat Burrell or someone like that) and a frontline starting pitcher.. No basis on your assumption of them cutting payroll.

The Braves are getting something for a guy they don't plan to bring back next year. Gregor Blanco is eight years younger (and much cheaper) than Kotsay and will inherit the position.
