KY vs Ohio

Featured Replies

You could send Holmes or Scott County up to Ohio and beat almost any team in Ohio

No, you couldn't.

Scott County certainly has seasons (maybe including the upcoming one) where they could play with anyone in Ohio.

But, as a general statement, and with the inclusion of Holmes, this isn't the case.

It didn't turn out so well for Holmes.

I was at this game and it was ugly. Mayo did not play due to being ill or hurt. Walker's line was 50 pts and 25 rebounds and he didn't really seem to hustle or try very hard. It was a mismatch.

Holmes is very good but they usually don't play any of this states powers let alone out of state. They did make it to the state finals this past year and will be tough to be beat this coming year.

The teams that do play powers out of state usually are Scott Co., Lex. Cath. and Mason Co.

They seem to have held their own and represented Kentucky very well over the years.

:flame:

Also we have more than a few teams within Kentucky that give the 3 mentioned above good games and hand out a few loses through out the year.

Kentucky basketball is better than the national polls suggest.

The last couple of years Manual and Ballard both bumped some teams and won against top out of state programs while winning tourneys.

Manual bumped off the top team from ATL last year to win 3rd place in the KOB. This was after UHA upset them.

Kentucky can do more than hold their own.

They did that to seemingly every team in the country that year. Holmes didn't win our state title that year. Also they usually aren't one of our typical top notch teams.

What happened when Mayo and the #1 team in the country played Scott Co. ?

( They split. ) Both games were very close. Thats no fluke.

In a given year a couple Kentucky teams can beat just about anyone in Ohio, but in general there are just too many urban areas that produce great basketball talent in Ohio. Cinncinatti and Cleveland both produce a lot of D-1 players. Lebron James is from Ohio btw.

Well, since I grew up in Ohio, and have spent the better part of the past two decades here in the Bluegrass, I figure I can say this with some degree of credibility. On any given year, you can problem find one or two teams from either state, that can be the "top dog" in basketball. That's not to say that it will ALWAYS be the same school(s). Even as great as Scott County or Holmes may be on a given year...they won't always run the table up north. And the converse is true too!

However, there is a definite difference between the two states. And I'll say it up front...THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS! But, in Kentucky, basketball is #1 (and also, #2, #3, #4...well, you get the picture). In Ohio, basketball also has its place...and usually it's after football season. Again, there are exceptions (like an OJ Mayo or a Lebron James) who are single sport superstars. But, if you go to many of the other "middle of the road" schools, you'll find a lot of kids playing BOTH sports. And in fact, they'll also play baseball or run track in the spring too! That's not to put down the Kentucky kids. It's just that the focus is sooooooooo much on basketball down here that I think they're almost fearful of the other sports.

Ohio has always had and will always have more Division I type players. The all-time great players from Ohio and Kentucky will not be close.

The obvious reason is numbers. Ohio has over 11 million people while Kentucky has about 4 million. Big, big, big difference.

I have always thought because of the interest level, Kentucky high school basketball is superior to Ohio basketball although I honestly feel the interest in Kentucky high school basketball is on the decline in recent years.

Scott Co. and Holmes neither one will likely run the table in Ky either. Scott Co 2 years ago is the only team in like 60 years to go undefeated vs. teams from the state of Ky. Its unlikely that it happens again any time soon.

Holmes and Scott County should run the table for the next two years... Holmes is a TEAM they dont have just one excellent player they have 7 or 8 excellent players and they play excellent D.. Bring most Ohio teams to Holmes and they will get a better game than any team they would play in Ohio. Same goes for Scott County

Its good to continue discounting the other top Kentucky teams. The season will tell the story.

Manual will get some love later in the season, relax.

Not just Manual, there's North Hardin and J'town too.

Whats your definition of "run the table?'' They play each other so they can't both run the table and both teams can't be state champs.

The bottom line is Ohio has more metropolitan areas (Dayton, Cincy, Columbus, Cleveland, Akron, Toledo, etc.), where as KY has two really large population bases, Lexington-Fayette and Louisville-Jefferson. One could also include the ever-growing Northern KY area as well in this debate, but in reality Ohio schools have a larger population base to draw higher caliber athletes from. Year in year out Ohio just has better athletes overall, but that doesn't mean some of Kentucky's better teams can't compete. What Billy Hick's has "built" at Scott County is a program that can be looked at as a top-notch program not only in the bluegrass, but the nation. Ohio doesn't seem to have the top-notch long-term programs in basketball like they do in football that draw national recognition for the long haul. That might be the one thing that KY may have on our neighbors to the North?
