Ayers has never asked for forgiveness nor has he said that he regretted his violent past. He may do so before the election, or Obama may just give another one of those, "That is not the Bill Ayers that I knew," speeches and then chuck him under the bus with his other shady associates.

You and I have completely different ideas of what a smear is. Bush spreading rumors in 2000 that McCain's adopted child was a result of an affair by him, with the knowledge that there was zero truth to it, is a smear.

 

Honestly, if McCain maintained a friendship with a leader of some white supremacist group and such was proven, I wouldn't consider the Democrats use of such to be a smear at all. I would consider it evidence of character and judgment that all voters should consider when they go into the voting booth.

 

If you haven't read the earlier link in this thread to an article written by Michael Barone, you should take the time to do so. It boils this issue down very well.

 

People truthfully and factually pointing out Obama's relationship with a past member of a domestic terrorist group who remains unrepenant and still wishes his group had done more bombing against our Country is not a smear.

 

It provides serious insight into the very serious issues of 1. whether Obama uses good judgment in selecting the people he associates with (think Rev Wright here) and how that lack of judgment could affect the people he surrounds himself and uses as advisors if he gets elected, and 2. whether Obama is a very liberal and radical person (as his past voting record and friendships could lead a logical person to conclude) or he is the moderate, centrist person he is attempting to portray himself to be on the stump. People (and politicians specifically) should be judged on their past actions not upon what they say. Yes people who have made mistakes in the past can change. But only a fool accepts words that a person will change as gospel.

 

What's that old saying: burn me once, shame on you; burn me twice, shame on me. If Obama is not the liberal politician that his past voting record indicates; if Obama doesn't believe in the messages that Wright and Ayers are spewing, he should spend the next 4 plus years proving to us that such is the case with his actions, not his words. He is selling us the message that we need "Change". Actually he is the one that must change if we wants to lead and unify this country. And maybe he has changed. But I haven't seen it, I've just heard it. And that's not good enough for me. I don't want to be burned twice and have the shame on me.
