Obama seeks to silence ad tying him to 60s radical

Featured Replies

Imagine what kind of assault on free speech this thin skinned socialist could launch with the entire executive branch of the federal government at his disposal. What a whiner Barack Hussein Obama is!

If McCain had not pushed through one of the biggest legislative assaults on the First Amendment in history, he could really make some political points by painting Obama as an anti-free speech candidate. He probably will make the charge anyway but it would be much more effective coming from a real free speech champion.

Obama seeks to silence ad tying him to 60s radical

DENVER (AP) - Barack Obama is striking back fiercely and swiftly to stamp out an ad that links him to a 1960s radical, eager to demonstrate a far more aggressive response to attacks than John Kerry did when faced with the 2004 "Swift Boat" campaign.

Obama not only aired a response ad to the spot linking him to William Ayers, but he sought to block stations the commercial by warning station managers and asking the Justice Department to intervene. The campaign also planned to compel advertisers to pressure stations that continue to air the anti-Obama commercial.

It's the type of going-for-the-jugular approach to politics many Democrats complain that Kerry lacked and that Republicans exploit.

Obama's target is an ad by the conservative American Issues Project, a nonprofit group that questions Obama's ties to Ayers, a founder of the Weather Underground organization that took credit for a series of bombings, including nonfatal explosions at the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol four decades ago.

Republicans are running their usual smear campaign at full speed...

As opposed to mocking McCain for jokingly referring to the rich/poor line as 5 million or not knowing how many investment properties his corporation owns.

First of all the Republicans did not run the ad, inform yourself.

Second of all, everything the ad states is 100% true.

I apologize for not being "informed" enough for you.

And the ad was ran by the "Conservative American Issues Project". So maybe I should have said, "Conservatives running their usual smear campaign". The same things happened when John Kerry ran for President in the last election. Conservatives, Republicans, whatever you want to call these people, did whatever they could to make John Kerry look like the worst person in the world. They are doing the same thing to Barack Obama.

The article said, Obama was 8 years old when Ayers committed the crimes, and Obama has publicly denounced the things that Ayers has done in the past. Regardless, what does any of this have to do with being the President of the United States? It's conservatives/republicans trying to make people afraid of electing Barack Obama.

Oh, and maybe you should read the entire article (i.e. inform yourself). The final paragraph says,

The fact that Barack Obama chose to launch his political career at the home of an unrepentant terrorist raises more questions about Senator Obama's judgment than any TV ad ever could," said McCain spokesman Brian Rogers.

Is a McCain spokesman not a Republican? I never said Republicans "ran the ad". I said they are running their usual smear campaign. Is that not true?

So as long as Obama publicly denounces what Osama did on 9/11 he can be friends with him?

What specifically has McCain or his campaign said about Obama's relationship with Ayers is not true and therefore a smear?

You may not find it troubling that the man who may become our next president has close ties with unrrepentant terrorists over a long period of time, but many Americans will find the association relevant. So, why should the public be kept in the dark about Bill Ayers, his terrorist wife, and their relationship with the Obamas?

Do you agree that with Obama calling for the Justice Department to intimidate media outlets into not running the ads? This seems like a more relevant issue to me than whether John McCain knows how many houses his wealthy wife owns.

Explain why Obama's age at the time that Ayers was bombing varous government buildings is relevant? Ayers is on record saying that he regrets not doing more damage - and Obama was not an eight-year old at the time.

Again, what part of the ad is not true? If the ad speaks the hurtful truth, then what right does our government have to censor the ad? What does it say about Obama's commitment to our constitutional rights that he seeks to use the Justice Department to intimidate media outlets from running critical political ads?

So as long as Obama publicly denounces what Osama did on 9/11 he can be friends with him?
It worked with Reverend Wright. So, why not?

Question: What do Barack Obama and Osama Bin Laden have in common?

Answer: Both have friends who bombed the Pentagon.

I can only take credit for posting the riddle and I cannot remember where I read it. Probably on some far right wing blog. :D

This is a problem for Obama. It has nothing to do with him being 8 when Ayres committed one of his acts of terrorism. It has to do with his association with him. They can't write it off as "well they live in the same neighborhood. Their kids go to the same schools." Ayres kids are grown. He's not seeing them at schools. Where he is seeing Ayres is at Ayres home when Ayres hosted a party on his behalf and on various boards. These guys didn't simply bump into each other at the A&P.

This has the chance of exploding in Obama's political face. We don't look very favorably on anyone who associates with known terrorists.

I believe that today is the day that the University of Chicago will be opening boxes of files that formerly belonged to an organization that Ayers founded and Obama sat on the board. A National Review reporter had previously been denied access to the records after initially being told that he could view them.
