St. Xavier/ Lexington Henry Clay Scrimmage

Featured Replies

Anyone have any details on this?

St. X was up 34-0 at halftime as two HC passes were intercepted and run back for touchdowns. I think the final score was something like 60-6.

X 34-0 at halftime. 54-6 late when I left in the fourth quarter. Deuce did not play

The St. X team looks as if they might be stronger this season than last season.

Henry Clay lost a lot and need to find their identity pretty quickly this season.

I honestly feel if St. X would let their two capable quarterbacks throw, say 40% of the time (not 15%), they could be hard to beat with a healthy Deuce Finch carrying the mail. I hope the Glaser boys realize that this is most important for their post season success.

Someone once said that three things can happen when you throw the ball, and 2 of them aren't good. You can catch it, the other team can catch it, or you can drop it or not catch it. I think St. X follows this strategy.

St. X won't change because of the success it has with the style it plays. It's hard to argue for a different approach with the number of wins, state titles and points they put up against very good competition. The philosophy of run the football and stop the run is a cornerstone of highly successful programs from grade school to the pros. The team that can control the line of scrimmage, run the football and stop the run will win almost every time. It sounds as if the Tigers are loaded for bear and sent a message to everybody else by pummeling Henry Clay.

Wasn't this scrimmage real close last year?

Is HC that bad or is 6A BGP #1 X that good?

To your point, the scrimmage last year at Henry Clay was real close, but X was without about 5 starters. Henry Clay had a strong performance by Guy at RB and Phillipi at QB, but they have graduated.

In this year's full game condition scrimmage, the score overall ended 60-6. The first three quarters was varsity competition, and the Tigers prevailed 48-6. For the second week in a row, St. X.'s top offensive weapon, Deuce Finch, and their top defensive linebacker, Craig Brutscher, watched from the sidelines. The 4th quarter was reserved for JV competition, and the Tigers prevailed here also by a 12-0 count (extra points were not even attempted).

The most impressive thing about this Tiger showing was that I do not think any one player scored twice. The quality depth of this team is truly amazing.

Defensively, St. X. looked very sharp also, especially in secondary coverage, hard hitting, and team pursuit.

Despite the score, I was very impressed with the potential of this Henry Clay team. It is a squad with both excellent size and speed. Inexperience at the QB position seemed to be the biggest current problem for the Blue Devils. They have two talented young individuals currently playing the position, who just need more practice time and game condition reps to tie the whole package together.

Nonetheless, the bottom line is that 6A BGP #1 St. X. IS AWFULLY GOOD.

It would be very safe to say that St.Xavier is arguable the best team in the state of Kentucky. It points directly to the stability and leadership of the program under Coach Glaser. His philosophy is simple, tried and true, and produces championship results. There is no substitute for on field playing time and Coach Simpson has graduated some quality players from last year's team. Henry Clay will be fine, Coach Simpson will continue to challenge his player's to get better and they will get back there.

Ouch!!! X and T should be a dandy...These 2 are clearly the cream of the crop this year, regardless of class...

And the beat goes on! Go Tigers!

So the two best teams in Lexington according to the preseason hype were behind a combined 64-0 versus Trinity and St. X at the half?

Lexington Catholic's state championship does not run through Louisville privates, and that is a big reason why they have had the post season success in the last three years. But the 6A Lexington school's state championship does run through the Louisville privates and their performances, of late, have bordered disgraceful.

Lexington schools have been put on notice that the gap seems to be getting bigger between them and the pace setters........Trinity and St. X.

What is being done to change this?

Coach Glaser has done great things to build the program. But the school supports X-cellence. Can they beat Trinity or the Cincinnati teams?

Did Fern Creek give St. X a better scrimmage last week than Henry Clay? What's your thoughts Tiger fans?
